Really Scary Review:
House of 1000 Corpses Soundtrack

by Valarie Thorpe

House of 1000 Corpses Soundtrack
Rob Zombie

Rob Zombie puts on an elaborate production with each release going back to his White Zombie days and the inventive soundtrack for House of 1000 Corpses is no exception. From the spectacular tri-fold packaging and booklet to the film poster representation on the disc itself, this cd is Zombie from beginning to end - and that's nothing but a good thing. But let's get to the music.

First up is an audio clip from the film introducing us to Captain Spaulding, the head of the homicidal household. Audio clips from the movie are interspersed between most of the songs. After a couple of listenings, I found myself hitting fast forward to jump over 'em but they're not a distraction and on the first couple of listens, they're good for setting.

Rob Zombie's House of 1000 Corpses title track is classic Rob, pounding bass punctuated with funky beatlines and good ol' scary lyrics. All of Zombie's songs deliver on this soundtrack, particularly Everybody Scream.

Pussy Liquor is another catchy tune, although for probably obvious reasons you're going to want to keep this one away from the younger listeners - although hell, this is Rob Zombie - you probably need to keep the whole damn thing away from them.

The other songs on the soundtrack are as diverse as you'd expect - Buck Owens, Ramones, Helen Kane and more. It's a strange listening experience to be creeped out by a Slim Whitman song.

But without a doubt, the classic on this cd is Zombie's collaboration with Lionel Richie on Brick House 2003. This redux starts out sounding a bit like porn and ends up with even your mom diggin' it. This is Brick House as funky as it wants to be. Richie said in a recent interview that Rob had definitely "zombified" it.

36-24-36 never sounded so good.
