Movement on American Gothic Movie?
Moviehole reports Fathom Pictures have been working to get an American Gothic movie off the ground. The original TV series starred Gary Cole as a smalltown Sheriff, who might also be the Devil. A Fathom source tells Moviehole there's been some movement:

"Little Magic Films, a company known more for their distribution efforts in Japan, are going to be the financial partners with Fathom on 'American Gothic,' assuming we can get the final approvals from Universal. Kiki Miyake is the President (and American representative for the company). The big hold-up right now is the pending sale of Universal to NBC. They are anticipating it to be done with by Christmas, but other think it will be longer. The question that holds us in limbo is personnel. Are the people that we are dealing with now still going to be here when the deal is done, or do we have to do it again with new faces? They are hesitant to make any decisions based on that. I anticipate something to solidly pan out by Spring. Everything else is still the same."

Fathom's plans are to do a new film version of the Sam Raimi exec.produced series, which much of the same cast. Raimi is in talks to direct and produce, with Brenda Bakke, Lucas Black and Jake Weber attached to star.

Fox Searchlight Picking Up Danny Boyle's Next
According to The Hollywood Reporter, English director Danny Boyle will follow up his horror feature 28 Days Later, with a flick called Millions. Fox Searchlight is reportedly acquiring North American rights to this one.

The film follows two Liverpudlian boys who stumble across money from a bank heist and have just one week to spend it all. Frank Cottrell Boyce penned the screenplay. Fox Searchlight, the arthouse division of Twentieth Century Fox, grossed $45 million-plus this year on Boyle's low-budget, digitally shot zombie thriller 28 Days Later. Boyle's credits also include Trainspotting and The Beach.

Romero & Rocky Horror Composer Join on Diamond Dead
In his first rock 'n' roll picture project since The Rocky Horror Picture Show, composer Richard Hartley has enlisted to write the music for Diamond Dead, a black comedy about an '80s-style rock band that comes back from the dead, according to Variety's Michael Fleming.

Hartley is being joined by Night of the Living Dead helmer George Romero, who will direct and has completed a rewrite of a script by Brian Cooper.

"If you're going to do dead guys, who are you going to call?" Romero said. "I loved the humor in the script, and the chance to work with Richard Hartley."

The story revolves around a subpar garage band and an aspiring female singer. She wants to sing with the guys, who are on the brink of breaking. Unfortunately, she dashes her own hopes when she accidentally wipes out the entire band.

"She makes a deal with Death to bring them back, but they return as zombies, which wasn't what she was banking on," Romero explained. "To make it more humorous, Death has a sick sense of humor and arranged it so that they are magically a smash-hit popular band. Whatever problems with things like decay doesn't mean they can't still play a mean lick."

Michael Caine Considering Batman's Alfred Role
THR reports Michael Caine could be stepping into the formal wear of Alfred, Bruce Wayne's butler, for director Christopher Nolan in Warner Bros. Pictures' upcoming installment in the Batman franchise.

Caine would join Christian Bale, who plays Wayne, the millionaire playboy by day who is the crime-fighting Caped Crusader by night. The script, which is kept tightly wrapped, has been written by Nolan and David Goyer.

The character of Alfred, an integral part of the Batman mythos, was played by Michael Gough in the most recent movies, starting with 1989's "Batman" and running up to 1997's "Batman & Robin." According to THR Warners declined comment.

The film is scheduled for release the film next year.

The script was originally written by William Wisher Jr. and Caleb Carr. Hawley's credits include Nightbird for MGM, The Program for Intermedia and The Greatest Player That Never Lived for Miramax Films.

Boris Karloff's original contract for "Frankenstein" went for $12,925, and a model of a dinosaur used in the original 1933 "King Kong" movie was bought for $41,125, according to Julien Entertainment, the company that held the auction Saturday on eBay and at an area hotel.

Other movie-related items included the razor-tipped glove used in a "Nightmare on Elm Street" sequel, which sold for $6,169; an idol from "Raiders of the Lost Ark"; a rubber dagger used in the TV series "Buffy the Vampire Slayer"; and a costume used by Patrick Stewart in "Star Trek: Nemesis."

Dawn of the Dead Trailer
Big thanks to the always kickass T. Bonesteel who has found us another trailer:

"What's going on RS? Once again, I was on the trailer hunt for you and I found the "Dawn of the Dead" trailer. It seems as if this remake grabbed some cues from "28 Days Later" because these zombies are moving fast. Is there anything scarier than a pack of running zombies? Also, there appears to be a lot more people boarded up in the mall this time around. Just more meat for the grinder I guess.

If you haven't seen it already, check out the link:

The Omen Screenwriter Working on Armageddon Mini for NBC
Reuters reports NBC has hired The Omen screenwriter David Seltzer to develop the script for a mini-series about a physicist and a nun racing to avert the apocalyptic final showdown between God and Satan as foretold in the Book of Revelations.

The untitled project is envisioned as a six-to-eight-part drama that would premiere after NBC's final Summer Olympics telecast in late August of 2004, airing an hour a week leading into September.

Although the project is one of many in the earliest stages of development at the major networks, Hollywood trade paper Daily Variety said NBC has made a premium six-figure commitment for the script, a sign of its commercial potential. If successful in drawing the big ratings of a big-event mini-series, the story of contemporary Armageddon could prove to be a powerful launch pad in advertising NBC's 2004 fall schedule.

Seltzer said that the Apocalypse is an especially timely subject given the current state of world events.

"What the Book of Revelation predicted is at hand," Seltzer said in a statement issued by NBC. "Nuclear brinkmanship, worldwide terrorism, collapsing economies and environmental atrocities make it clear that the critical mass of injury to this planet is sufficient to bring down the wrath of God and put the biblical prophecies into play. What is not written in the Bible is whether man can do anything about it. This is where our story begins," he said.

Gilliam's Grimm Set Sketch
Guy Hendrix Dyas captured the imagination of director Terry Gilliam with sketches of set designs such as this. Hendrix Dyas then recreated the drawing on a massive sound stage at Prague's Barrandov Studios for the shooting of 'The Brothers Grimm.' The movie, starring Matt Damon and Heath Ledger, is scheduled to be released in Fall 2004. [Source: Yahoo]

Possible Movement on Black Dahlia Movie Front?
Dark Horizons reports Josh Hartnett is in talks for the long-troubled adaptation of James Ellroy's classic noir novel The Black Dahlia. The story is a fictional take on the story of two cops obsessed with the notorious 1947 unsolved murder case of Elizabeth Short, an aspiring actress found dead and mutilated in a vacant LA lot where she was dumped after apparent days of torture. The police officers in question are both ex-boxers who are in love with the same woman -- a bisexual woman who may have slept with the 'Dahlia' herself. Brian De Palma is currently attached to direct according to Production Weekly. DePalma replaces Fight Club helmer David Fincher who has long been a part of the production in question which has been stuck in 'development hell' for years now.

If you haven't read this classic yet, definitely get a copy for yourself. Don't wait for the movie, this is an incredible book you're missing out on.

Constantine Producer Says Hellblazer Obscure Comic
Sci-Fi Wire reports (via DH) that Lauren-Schuler Donner (producer of among other things the X-Men, Pretty in Pink and the Free Willy series) spoke about the Keanu Reeves-led Hellblazer adaptation she's involved in. She told Sci-Fi Wire that "It's not an origin story of the character. It's 'Dangerous Habits,' if you know the Hellblazer [series]. We're filming, we're about a third into it. It's come along great. And it'll be out next year, probably, well, at the moment, September.

"We're shooting in L.A. A lot at Warner Brothers. A lot downtown. Two weeks we're in Long Beach. And we're trying to stay as true to the comic as we can, though it's an obscure comic. Not many people know Hellblazer. [Are you shittin' kidding? The producer of Bulworth thinks the Hellblazer comic, which has been around for 188 issues (for those who are counting that's more than 15 years) is obscure??? Now maybe we know why it's being shot in the U.S. and not the U.K. and why it has freakin' Keanu Reeves in it versus, Oh, I don't know, maybe a BRITISH GUY?! Christ on a spinning crutch. We now return you to the blathering producer already in progress...]

"And it's coming along well. We have a new director named Francis Lawrence, who's just doing a great job. We're very lucky, because he understands actors and understands the importance of telling a story, and not just the visuals. And yet it's going to be very stylish."

Really Scary Exclusive: Denice Duff Buying Subspecies Rights?
Alexxus brings us this Really Scary exclusive: Denice Duff, the horror hottie who recurrently played a plum role in producer Charles Band's Subspecies franchise [parts II through IV], enlightened me to the following: "Ted Nicolaou [director of Subspecies I through IV] recently had dinner with Charles Band, and Charlie said he would sell the rights to Subspecies to another distributor. Ted and I want to take it and do it ourselves. There was a dollar amount given, which I think is pretty reasonable, so now we're looking for a Subspecies V investor."

Duff, a genre veteran, notes that her latest horror saga, The Last Patient, "is in post-production. The plot involves a convict who is admitted into a clinic for something called Rage Impulse Disorder. My character finds out that the masterminding doctor [Wishmater's Andrew Divoff] isn't really what he's cracked up to be."

The delectable Duff made her directorial debut in Vampire Resurrection, which has debuted at a Blockbuster near you. Check out the Scary Voices column where Denice talks about directing.

He said that the fans overwhelming negative reaction and logistical reasons are why. In regards to "Halloween 9" he also commented on the possibility of Danielle Harris making a cameo as well as Dick Warlock (Michael Myers from Halloween 2). He also said he will NOT revisit the Thorn plot. Joe Wolf of Compass international said Jamie Lee Curtis might cameo in H9 as well."

In other coverage of the Fall Mass Market Toy Expo 2003, Figures got pics of the new Hellraiser figures, a Jason replica mask from NECA, evil Willow (was it just us or did she look very hot evil - well minus the face cracks of course), and a ton more. Dig around this site, they're loaded with tons of photos about upcoming lines.

Battle of the Amityvilles
Now there's two Amityville Horror projects on the horizon. Daily Variety, reported earlier about the remake of the 1979 horror hit MGM has planned. The second, coming from Miramax' Dimension Films, is billed as inspired by the man whose family moved into said Long Island residence.

The small, but important distinction at work here: The first project, like the original movie, is based on the book about George Lutz's family; the second project is based on George Lutz's family.

The remake, or "reinvention," as one insider put it, is being scared up by Michael Bay's production company. The über-director got his horror remake blade wet producing the all-new Texas Chainsaw Massacre.

That one is being eyed for a late summer or fall 2004 release, even though little matters, like who'll star and direct it, haven't yet been decided. MGM, home of the original franchise, will distribute the flick through its United Artists division.

The competing Amityville flick from Miramax's Dimension Films, will place the story 25 years after George Lutz, portrayed by James Brolin in the 1979 film, packed up and left the house from hell. No cast or director named to that project, either.

"We don't anticipate a lawsuit [from MGM] because the story and the events surrounding the house are public domain," Dimension's Bob Weinstein told Variety. "We've come up with our own take on the story."

When Harry Met Sally in a House of 1000 Corpses
Rob Zombie is taking part in a live chat with fans over at WashingtonPost.com and we dropped him a quickie question about the House of 1,000 Corpses sequel and what sort of differences we might see and most importantly...would Baby be back. Here's what he passed back:

"Yes, Baby will be back in action. It is hard to talk about a film that doesn't exsist yet, but it will be a much darker rougher movie. Otis and company are really shown as the evil folks that they are. No joking around in this one. it will make the first one look like When Harry met Sally."

Check back later for more of his conversation.

iFilm Halloween Showcase

Marge: "Go Crazy?"

Homer: "Don't mind if I do!"

Watchmen Casting?
AICN (via Dark Horizons) reports John Cusack is attached to play Dan/Nite-Owl in Watchmen, Revolution Studios new comic adaptation.

Pinhead vs. Michael Myers?
Doug Bradley (Hellraiser's Pinhead) tells The Brownsville Gazette (via DH) that a Hellraiser and Halloween crossover is in the formative stages.

"At this point in fact, Dimension Films are planning a Hellraiser/Halloween crossover," Bradley said, emphasizing that the project is only in the planning stage. "They are hoping to have it out by Halloween next year. That would be pretty fast, but thatÕs their plan."

Dog Soldiers Duo Working on The Dark
A Dark Horizon's source wrote in with word of a new project from the duo who brought us the cult werewolf action flick Dog Soldiers. Neil Marshall (writer/director) and Keith Bell (producer) are beginning work on The Dark and here's the details:

"I'm a student on a Media Production course at a University in North East England, and as part of our course we've just had a special guest lecture from the makers of Dog Soldiers - seems the two were students at the University ten or so years ago. They opened the floor for questions, and I managed to get some information on their future projects. The have a film entitled 'The Dark' that goes into production next year. Marshall described it as a throwback to the horror movies of the '70s, really scary stuff more concerned with scaring the shit out of the audience than being tongue in cheek. They were quite tight-lipped, but did say its kind of like a combo of Deliverance and Alien, about a group of five women trapped in a network of caves. The two guys joked the tagline was 'Chicks With Picks'. They're also starting serious work on a zombie film, as well as a historical epic set in Arthurian times."

Daredevil Director Joins Succubus
Variety reports Daredevil director Mark Steven Johnson has landed a deal with MGM for Succubus, a horror film with comic elements that Johnson will direct right after he completes Ghost Rider.

More Alien vs. Predator Casting
Cinescape reports actress Sanaa Lathan (played Blade's mother in first film) has landed the role of Lex Kline in Alien vs. Predator, Paul W.S. Anderson's meeting of the 20th Century Fox extraterrestrials. Lathan's character is the lead in the film, kind of like Sigourney Weaver's Ripley in the stand-alone Alien films. Lathan's Kline is a professional explorer hired by billionaire Charles Wayland to investigate the strange pyramid discovered beneath the surface of Antartica.

Lathan joins the previously announced Lance Henriksen (Charles Wayland) and the newly revealed cast members Ewen Bremmer and Raoul Bova. Shooting is set to begin Oct. 28 in Prague.

Renny Harlin New Director on Exorcist Prequel?
Cinescape reports they've been sent an unconfirmed scoop that Renny Harlin (Deep Blue Sea) has been hired as the new director for Exorcist: The Beginning. According to our source, Harlin will begin reshooting the film to make it more in line with what Morgan Creek wanted at the end of November. Harlin has reportedly been given an additional $8 million dollars to achieve this goal. Warner Bros., the studio that will release the picture, wants to have the film out in theaters by April or May of next year.

Black Christmas, Dead Things & Deathdream Getting Remakes
Fangoria reports three of director Bob Clark's '70s horror flicks are up for remake.

"There will be new versions of Deathdream [with Eli Roth attached], Children Shouldn't Play with Dead Things, which may become a sequel, and now Black Christmas," Clark said. "A Canadian company has just picked up the remake rights to Black Christmas. Of these three, the one I will most likely be involved with is Children Shouldn't Play with Dead Things. I'm actually excited about doing horror again, after being away from it for so long."

Ex-Employee Says Warner Bros. Knew of Exorcist Accounting Errors
Reuters reports a former Warner Bros. employee has sued the film studio claiming he was wrongly fired from his job overseeing certain accounting functions because he uncovered problems with profit participation in The Exorcist and 140 other movies. Major films like the hit 1973 horror movie about a girl possessed by the devil often have several people who either co-own the film or by virtue of their contract, participate in the ticket sales or profits.

In July this year, Warner Bros. settled a lawsuit with Exorcist director William Friedkin and producer William Peter Blatty, who claimed the studio had deprived them of their fair share of the profits by understating the film's revenue.

In his lawsuit filed on Wednesday in Los Angeles County Superior Court, Ruben Mellado claims he was fired after he discovered errors were made in the accounting for The Exorcist, and that Warner Bros. executives knew about the problems as far back as 1999 and failed to correct them, according to the court filing.

Zombie Working on Comic Book, 1000 Corpses Sequel & More
Launch reports Rob Zombie may be taking a break from recording, but he's busy with tons of other projects. First out of the gate will be a new comic book series called Spookshow International. The first issue comes out on Halloween and will feature stories written by Rob and drawn by a variety of artists.

"There's three different stories in each issue that continue, and they're kind of all over the place," Zombie said. "Some of them are really, my favorite one is this thing called 'El Superbeasto,' which is sort of like this Mexican wrestler hero guy, but it's sort of like adult but silly. He lives in this sort of world that's nothing but monsters and strippers, so it's sort of like an Austin Powers meets the Munsters type thing. So some of them are ridiculous like that, and some of them are a little more serious."

Zombie is also getting ready to direct the sequel to House Of 1000 Corpses. He told Launch what direction he plans to take the movie in. "It's a very different movie this time around," Zombie said. "It's much darker, more serious movie, so we wanna really take all the characters that starred in the first movie and, you know, really flesh 'em out. The first one is what it is, but to continue on in that direction in any way would just make it become kind of like a joke -- too campy, too silly. So the next one's really, it's not very humorous at all."

Zombie says he completed the script for House Of 1000 Corpses 2 last week and hopes to start shooting right after Christmas. Expect a different title as well.

Zombie's new album is a greatest hits collection called Past, Present, And Future. The first single is a brand new tune called "Two Lane Blacktop."
