Sixth Sense Stays on Top
Demonstrating a remarkable hold at the North American box office, "The Sixth Sense" became the first movie in more than two months to keep the No. 1 position for a second weekend as audiences lined up to watch a boy who can see dead people.

Variety reports the dramatic thriller, which stars Bruce Willis as a child psychologist who helps a boy (played by Haley Joel Osment) deal with his troubling powers, pulled in $26.1 million for the Friday-to-Sunday period.

The 10-day tally for the Hollywood Pictures release is $70 million; its per-screen average was a strong $10,901, and its three-day haul slipped by just 2.1 percent from its opening round.

The last movie to rule the box office for consecutive weeks was ``Star Wars: Episode I -- The Phantom Menace,'' whose three weekend reign ended June 4-6.

Blair Witch Web Ratings Soar
Variety reports The Blair Witch Project's astronomical web ratings have been verified by the Nielsen NetRatings. Artisan Entertainment, who has frequently credited its Web site as crucial to the box office success, now has the numbers to back that up. For the week ending Aug. 1 -- when the film widened to 1,000 screens -- Blairwitch.com was the 45th most used site on the Web. The site's unique audience hit 647,997, with 10.4 million page views and an average time of each person visiting of 16 minutes and 8 seconds.

That compares favorably to the summer's other big hits. The official site for the Star Wars film franchise peaked at 676,000 unique hits when Star Wars: Episode I -- The Phantom Menace opened in May.

William Castle Legacy Tingles On
Variety reports Terry Castle, daughter of the late William Castle, horror film director and producer known for his B horror classics of the late 1950s and 1960s, is relaunching William Castle Prods.

The senior Castle was known as much for his exhibition gimmicks -- including having a nurse in attendance for the faint of heart, or wiring seats to give audience members a mild electric shock during scary scenes -- as for the films themselves.

Said an enthusiastic Castle from her San Francisco offices: ''Dad buzzed over 20 million butts in 'Tingler,' had a skeleton fly above the theater audience's heads in 'House of Haunted Hill,' insured theater attendees against 'death by fright' in 'Macabre,' and introduced the 'Fright Break' with the 'Cowards Corner' for those too afraid to see the end of 'Homicidal.' People don't forget this kind of unique movie-going experience.''

William Castle Prods. will initially focus on films for kids as well as on the old-fashioned style of horror filmmaking. The company is developing ``Point Dume,'' a psychological thriller that ``Are You Afraid of the Dark?'' creator D.J. MacHale is co-writing and slated to direct; and ``Rubbish,'' a thriller in which teenagers break off from the monotony of a youth tour to find themselves trapped overnight inside a medieval Warwick castle.

Blair Witch DVD for Halloween?
In a follow-up on our recent Blair Witch DVD report. The Digital Bits reports that Artisan Entertainment will release a DVD version of The Blair Witch Project on October 26th, just in time for Halloween. However, word is now that there isn't going to be time enough to assemble and replicate a DVD-18 version for that street date, so the October release will only include the film, plus the Sci-Fi Channel program, "The Curse of the Blair Witch."

However, don't despair - that loaded special edition DVD we told you about last month is still planned, and should be released 4 to 6 months after the basic release. The Blair Witch Project: Special Edition will have lots of deleted scenes, multiple alternate endings, audio commentary, and lots more.

Blair Witch Project Parts II and III?
According to the Hollywood Reporter, Artisan Entertainment, the indie distributor handling the Blair Witch Project, is looking to the movie to provide a future lucrative franchise. Following the film's $28.5 million haul in its first weekend of wide release, its creators plan to meet Monday with Artisan for preliminary discussions about a follow-up that has been targeted for release next summer. Sources said writer-directors Daniel Myrick and Eduardo Sanchez have outlined at least four potential story lines, including two prequels. One would explore the ancient Blair Witch legend, and another would recount the legend of a 1940s serial killer who murdered seven children (and is mentioned in the original film).

Burkittsville Residents Proving Good Sports
Residents of the now most famous town with a population of 200 have proven to be extremely good sports about the Blair Witch phenomena. Burkittsville folks have put up with graveyard vandalism, strangers asking to use homeowners bathrooms (FYI--there are no public restrooms in Burkittsville), their town sign stolen and just general goofiness from horror movie fans.

One group of residents has even gone so far in their pleasantness as to offer free Burkittsville postmarks from their little town if you send a SASE. They aren't even asking for money. (Although, they may hope this will keep the actual number of Burkittsville pilgrimagers to a minimum.) But nonetheless, it's an amazing gesture. For more information about the real story of Burkittsville and how to get your very own postmark, go to www.burkittsville.org. Tell 'em Really Scary sent you.
