Blair Witch Hits Box Office Big
Opening in only 1,101 theaters, the Blair Witch Project hit tremendous numbers by
pulling down $28.5 million in its first weekend of wide release.
This landed the Project in the number two spot comfortably ahead of
Deep Blue Sea, which only brought in $18.6, even though DBS opened in
more than two times the number
of theaters as the Blair Witch Project.
Runaway Bride landed the top spot at the box office but only $6 million
ahead of BWP and Runaway Bride opened in 2,000 more theaters than the Blair Witch Project!
Blair Witch DVD...4 to 6 Hours of Really Scary Stuff?
Digital Bits (the DVD info site) reports in their rumor mill (this has
not been confirmed) Artisan Entertainment may be preparing a DVD release of
The Blair Witch Project wait for it...
which will contain some
4 to 6 hours worth of material!
The set will include 3 alternate endings, a horde of deleted scenes, and the recent SciFi Channel documentary on the
making of the film, and more. Digital Bits also reportes
there's a chance, depending on how long the film sustains theatrically, that Artisan
may try to get it out in time for Halloween. Now that's
Really Scary!
Labyrinth on DVD!
This one's not truly scary, but the VHS of this movie has been out of print
for so long, that's scary. Finally, David Bowie's Labyrinth will be
released on DVD.
According to Image Entertainment, Labyrinth will be released Sept. 21 and will
list for a SRP of $24.95. Nothing listed in the way of special editions add ons.

Clarice Starling the Vampire Slayer?
Word out and about is that Buffy the Vampire Slayer's own Sarah Michelle Gellar is
starring in Hannibal. Trying to fill a character created on screen by Jodie Foster will be
a tougher challenge than any of the Sunnydale vampires. Whether Gellar said this to
a reporter from the Dallas Morning News or whether the reporter suggested it has yet
to be determined. Gellar's a little young for the role of Clarice but we'll tell you
when we know.
Seven Meets The Shining?
David Kirschner and Marty Katz have joined to produce Brent Hanley's script
Frailty, according to the Hollywood Reporter.
Described as Seven meets The Shining, the script is a nonlinear psychological
horror about a single father of two boys in rural Texas who may or may not be
able to identify demons. As the father embarks on a mission to eradicate evil
people, one son sees him as a hero, while the other sees Dad as a demon.
Scott Lobdell Takes Hellhole to Film
Scott Lobdell has signed a multifilm, first-look deal for film, television and
comic book development with Miramax genre label Dimension Films,
according to the Hollywood Reporter.
Included is a
film adaptation of Hellhole, an Image comic book created by Lobdell and
Adam Pollina. A fantasy thriller about a secret police force that protects against
beings from a supernatural world, Hellhole will be produced by Lawrence
Bender's Miramax-based A Band Apart banner.
Mummy Writer/Director Signs On for Sequel
According to the Hollywood Reporter, Universal Pictures has signed Stephen
Sommers to return as writer-director on a sequel to The Mummy.
They plan to have the film in production by next summer with a 2001 release
date. The horror-comedy starring Brendan Fraser has grossed more than $150
million domestically since its May 7 opening.
