John Carpenter's GHOSTS OF MARS (August 24th) In 2025, a mining operation has uncovered a long-dormant Martian civilization which is systematically taking over the bodies of human intruders. Its up Mars' most dangerous crim and his police escort to stop them. Stars: Natasha Henstridge, Ice Cube, Clea DuVall.

SOUL SURVIVORS (August 24th) - After a horrible car accident kills her boyfriend, a college student finds herself plagued by hallucinations of him coming back to life. Her friends, many of whom are crash survivors themselves, try to help through the experience. Stars: Casey Affleck, Melissa Sagemiller, Wes Bentley.

DVD Maniacs report it's time to thrown out your old VHS tapes of Sleepaway Camp 2 and 3 as it's official, Anchor Bay has acquired the rights for DVD release. They're planned for a 2002 release.

Stephen King's Rose Red Miniseries Airing Set
Fangoria reports ABC has set a date for Stephen King's six-hour Rose Red miniseries: It'll air over three consecutive nights in February 2002. Hyperion is putting out a tie-in book in January called The Diary of Ellen Rimbauer: My Life at Rose Red, supposedly a journal kept by one of the miniseries' key characters. It's supposedly edited by Joyce Reardon, Ph.D, which is likely a pseudonym (but is unlikely to be King himself).

News on Dario's Latest Giallo
Fangoria reports Dario Argento's latest giallo-style thriller is due to start shooting this fall. Tentatively titled Sunglasses, the story concerns a movie actress haunted by her dark past. Asia Argento, who recently had a baby, will not star.

Wolf Lake Getting Changes & New Writer
One of CBS' upcoming fall series is Wolf Lake, which had been described earlier as having a 'X-Files meets werewolves' premise. Set in the Pacific Northwest, the show stars Lou Diamond Phillips as a government employee who investigates a series of strange wolf sightings in sleepy Washington town. Now, however, 13th Street reports CBS has announced that the show will receive a slight overhaul before airing.

Wolf Lake's creator/executive producer, John Leekley, has left the project and has been replaced by Alex Ganza, a former X-Files writer. One of Ganza's changes has been to add an additional element for Phillips' character, that being his search for a lost love now living in the town.

Rick Kellard and Toni Graphia have also been hired as producers for the show, and one of the pilot's stars, Stacy Edwards, has also exited. The new producers are also tweaking other story elements to establish ongoing plot points that can be expanded throughout the series.

Jurassic Park 4 Already On the Drawing Table?
It doesn't take long these days...4Filmmakers have listed the signing on of Steven Spielbert and Michael Crichton as executive producers for Jurassic Park 4. As expected Universal and Amblin are involved. And Kathleen Kennedy is listed as producer.

Romero Talks Night of the Living Dead 4
Wheee! Night of the Living Dead 4 news. On his official site, George Romero recently said the following regarding getting the movie into production: "Anchor Bay has an offer on the table for a 3-4 million dollar budget. I'm afraid the film might cost 5-6. I hope A.B. will agree to taking in a "partner", maybe a European company. If not, maybe private investment can be found. Either way, I am currently working on the script...almost finished... and I am hoping for the best."

He didn't give much away plot wise but he did drop a few bits, "A "fortified city" is central to the plot. Fat Cats and 'Smarties' have decided to "reclaim" their lives...despite obvious difficulties, which plays into the 'ignoring the problem' subtext. The only other thing I'm willing to say is that DEAD 4, if it happens, is going to be fabulous... a great big bundle of shock and entertainment that will make you sing and dance all the way to your grave site.

He did add that when the fourth Dead film is made he is keeping the DVD-buying public in mind, as far as commentaries, deleted scenes, special effects studies, etc. "J.B. Destiny and I have been discussing a video documentation of the entire process, beginning to end," he said.

UPN Buffy Season Opener Pushed to October
UPN50 out of Detroit reports that the 2-hour Buffy season opener won't hit TVs until Oct. 9 at 8 p.m., not in August as earlier reports had indicated.

Elfman Puts Together Monster Orchestra for Planet Score
A Dark Horizons source reported that the score for Planet of the Apes by Danny Elfman is huge, and will require one of the biggest orchestras ever assembled on a scoring stage. The early draft versions of the music, done by synthesizer in MP3 format, sound terrific and should be more so when the musicians get their hands on it. The orchestrators and copyists are apparently going full steam to get the music ready for Friday's session (the last possible minute).

AFI Puts Out Kickass Top Thriller List
Horror fared very well in the American Film Institues's list of the 100 most thrilling movies with the mother of all slasher films, Psycho, headlining the list. Jaws and The Exorcist rounded out the top three coming in second and third.

Hitchcock placed nine movies on the list, with two others in the top 10 - North by Northwest at No. 4 and The Birds at No. 7. Other horror in the top 10 included: No. 5, The Silence of the Lambs; No. 6, Alien; No. 8 and No. 9, Rosemary's Baby.

Official Reports Out About Red Dragon Filming
Although this news has been out and about for some time, Daily Variety has an official report (via Reuters) that says Universal Pictures is moving ahead with plans to bring Hannibal Lecter back to the big screen in a prequel to the 1991 hit Silence of the Lambs and recent follow-up Hannibal.

Director Brett Ratner (Rush Hour) is in talks with Universal to receive about $4 million to direct Red Dragon, an adaptation of Thomas Harris' 1981 best-selling crime thriller that first introduced Hannibal to readers.

Anthony Hopkins is in negotiations to reprise his Oscar-winning Lecter role for Dragon, depending on the script, according to the entertainment trade paper.

It said Universal, the studio arm of Vivendi Universal, will finance the picture and release it worldwide. Dino De Laurentiis, who produced Hannibal, will return to produce the Red Dragon with Martha De Laurentiis.

Academy Award-winning screenwriter Ted Tally (The Silence of the Lambs) came aboard the project last November to adapt Red Dragon.

The story opens with Lecter being arrested for the first time by ex-FBI (news - web sites) agent Will Graham, a top investigator who quit the bureau after nearly becoming one of Lecter's victims. Red Dragon was previously made into the 1986 picture Manhunter, directed by Michael Mann and produced by the De Laurentiises. They say the new film will incorporate elements of the book not seen in Manhunter.

Ed Harris, Kim Basinger, and Dame Maggie Smith are also in talks to star in the supernatural thriller, about a master thief working as a bodyguard for a wealthy industrialist who sold his soul to the devil.
