Vin Diesel Attached to Hellboy
Coming Attractions has confirmed that actor Vin Diesel is now attached to play the role of Hellboy. While no contract exists for the actor yet to play the part, having Diesel attached to the title role should be considered a major shot of adrenaline in the project's arm -- and if Diesel's next movie for Universal, The Fast and the Furious, has a solid performance this summer, things could start moving forward on a Hellboy feature.

MGM Drops Basic Instinct 2, Stone Sues Studio
The Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer Inc. film studio has dropped its plans for a sequel to the hit thriller Basic Instinct, and actress Sharon Stone is suing producers, saying they reneged on a $14 million commitment to her, Daily Variety reported on Thursday.

The decision to pull Basic Instinct 2, originally set for a 2002 release, from the studio's development slate was revealed during a media conference in New York on Wednesday by MGM chairman and CEO Alex Yemenidjian, the entertainment trade paper said.

"Unfortunately, it's not going to happen," Variety quoted Yemenidjian as telling investors. He declined to explain the reasons publicly.

His official pronouncement of the project's death came the same day as a lawsuit filed in Los Angeles by Stone, who was attached to reprise her role as Catherine Trammel.

The lawsuit alleges that Basic Instinct 2 producers Andy Vajna and Mario Kassar had a verbal agreement with Stone guaranteeing her at least $14 million for her commitment to the sequel, even if the movie never got made, Variety said.

The suit claims that under her "pay-or-play" deal, Stone stood to gain as much as 15 percent of gross receipts if the film were released. The original 1992 movie, which co-starred Michael Douglas, grossed $400 million worldwide.

Under the agreement described in the suit, shooting was to have begun by the end of last year but was pushed back to Feb. 15, 2001, Variety said. The suit alleges that Stone rejected other offers on the basis of the producers' commitments, but that they denied in December having a contract of any kind with the actress, Variety said.

Vajna and Kassar declined comment on the lawsuit, the trade paper said.

Dr. Casey Closing Down
One of the really great original horror sites is leaving us. The Cabinet of Dr. Casey has decided to call it a day. We'll miss it and wish Casey all the best. Here's his closing message:

After seven years on the Internet, the time has come for The Cabinet of Dr. Casey to close its doors. The load of maintaining the site has proven to be too great and I have decided to free up some time to pursue some other interests. I sincerely appreciate all of the enthusiasm and support I've received over the years and hope you all enjoyed the site as much as I did building it!

Duchovny Not Returning to X-Files At All
As David Duchovny puts it, Fox Mulder is "kissin' and runnin'." The actor says he won't return to The X-Files next season--not even for a cameo. Variety reports after a year of occasional (and usually brief) appearances, Duchovny says he's through with the Fox sci-fi series, despite the fact that his G-man character smooched longtime partner Dana Scully during the season finale, and that he is likely the father of her baby.

"Yeah, I'm done with the TV show," Duchovny told reporters Sunday, during interviews for his new sci-fi comedy, Evolution. "I don't think it's fair to me or the fans" to do more cameos.

Duchovny's role on Fox's long-running series has diminished significantly since last year, when the 40-year-old actor signed a deal to continue his role on the show--but only for a handful of episodes. Since then, Scully's been joined by a new partner, Agent John Doggett ( Robert Patrick), and Annabeth Gish has had a recurring role as Agent Monica Reyes.

But with the new cast comes new storylines, and Duchovny said the show has changed.

"I think the consciousness of the show is this quest of Mulder's and the core of the show is Mulder and Scully," he said. "When I came back at the end of this year--by necessity, by my choice of not being on the show full-time--other ideas, other stories, had come to the center stage. When I came back, I felt somewhat peripheral. Mulder's story was one of three or four stories...and it didn't feel like the same show to me."

While fans initially rejoiced that Duchovny agreed to appear in episodes last season, he says that to continue the cameos "feels cheap," and that it wouldn't be fair to the show's rabid followers.

"I think to bring back Mulder's character peripherally is not fair to the character that I feel a lot of affinity for. I feel like the fans respect Mulder as the center consciousness of the show. And to have him come back like Superman's dad or whatever--it just feels cheap to me."

Duchovny said his limited involvement last season on The X-Files "made it weirder. It was almost like a stepdad was in the house...and I still have my stuff in the house."

Duchovny's comments seem to answer, once and for all, continued speculation over whether he'd play a small role next season, especially considering the questions raised by the season finale. But Duchovny didn't rule out the possibility of appearing in another X-Files movie, saying he'd consider it "if they ask me."

Based on the best-selling novel by Thomas Harris, "Hannibal" continues the story begun in The Silence of the Lambs. Seven years have passed since Dr. Hannibal Lecter (Anthony Hopkins) escaped from custody, seven years since FBI Agent Clarice Starling (Julianne Moore) interviewed him in a maximum-security hospital for the criminally insane. The doctor is now at large in Europe, pursuing his own interests, savoring the scents, the essences of an unguarded world. But Starling has never forgotten her encounters with Dr. Lecter - his seldom-used voice still haunts her dreams. Mason Verger remembers Dr. Lecter, too, and is obsessed with revenge. Verger was Dr. Lecter’s sixth victim, and, though hideously disfigured, has survived.
