Torres Guesting on Angel
THR reports (via SCI FI Wire) longtime genre TV staple Gina Torres (Firefly, Alias) will guest star in three upcoming episodes of The WB's Angel. Torres will reportedly play a "godlike" being who's been the guiding hand behind recent events on the show, the trade paper reported. Angel returns to The WB's schedule on March 5.

Buffy Actor Discusses Ep Details
Tom Lenk, who plays the nerdy Andrew in UPN's Buffy the Vampire Slayer, told SCI FI Wire that the Feb. 25 episode, "Storyteller," will have his character shooting a video documentary of the Scooby Gang. "The writers call it a Lenk-tastic episode," Lenk said in an interview. "It's all about Andrew documenting everything that happens in the Buffy household. He talks to the camera and whatnot, sort of Blair Witch-style meets Waiting for Guffman."

The episode includes Lenk's first-person segments. "It's a normal Buffy [episode] intercut with lots of video footage," Lenk said. "So you see the footage of the actual documentary that I'm making, in addition to flashbacks and dream sequences." Lenk added that he's concerned that the audience may not be ready for him to star in an episode. "I am a little concerned that perhaps I'm not funny in large doses. We'll see. It will be the test."

Cronenberg Talks About Painkillers
Director David Cronenberg (eXistenZ, The Dead Zone) told SCI FI Wire that his next film, Painkillers, will find him once again tapping into the SF vein. "I've been saying that it's about performance artists in the future, but in the near future," Cronenberg said in an interview. "That's all I can really say, because I'm rewriting it, and it's sort of a deep rewrite. I haven't looked at it in a while, and now I'm coming back to it."

Cronenberg confirmed rumors that both Nicolas Cage and Ralph Fiennes (who appears in the director's upcoming Spider) are considering playing the lead character in Painkillers. "No one is attached," he said. "No one has made a deal. But yes, Nic Cage has read the first draft and liked it and said he was interested. And, yes, Ralph has read the same script and said he would be interested in doing it. So that's good. Maybe I should get them both in the movie. Now that would be interesting."

Downey Jr. Joining Cruz & Berry in Gothika Cast?
Robert Downey Jr. is in negotiations to star opposite Halle Berry in Dark Castle Entertainment's supernatural thriller Gothika for director Mathieu Kassovitz, according to The Hollywood Reporter. Production begins in April, with Warner Bros. Pictures distributing domestically and Columbia Pictures taking on international territories.

Written by Sebastian Gutierrez, Gothika stars Berry as a criminal psychologist who awakens to find herself a patient in her own mental institution with no memory of the murder she has apparently committed. As she struggles to reclaim her sanity, she finds herself the pawn of a vengeful spirit. Penelope Cruz will play Chloe, a fellow inmate in the asylum. Downey will play a psychaitrist and colleague of Berry's character.

Dench & Feore Joining Chronicles of Riddick
According to THR, Judi Dench is in final negotiations to star opposite Vin Diesel in Universal Pictures' Chronicles of Riddick for writer-director David Twohy, Radar Pictures and One Race Prods. Production begins in Vancouver in April.

At the same time, Colm Feore (Stephen King's Storm of the Century) has come aboard to play the lead villain in the project, which is a sequel to the 2000 film Pitch Black, about an intergalactic prisoner named Riddick who has the ability to see in the dark.

In the sequel, Riddick, now a hunted man, finds himself in the middle of two opposing forces in a major crusade. Feore will play Lord Marshal, a warrior priest who is the leader of a sect that is waging the 10th and perhaps final crusade 500 years in the future. Dench will play Aereon, an ambassador from the Elemental race. She is an ethereal being who helps Riddick unearth his origins.

"Both Judi and Colm are formidable talents, both classically trained, and I look forward to bringing these two bright stars into our dark, new universe," Twohy said.

Ring Director Nakata Selects English Language Film Debut
Variety reports Japanese director Hideo Nakata will make his English-language feature debut with the MGM supernatural thriller True Believers. Nakata directed The Ring and a sequel that inspired the Gore Verbinski-directed DreamWorks film that is in the process of being sequelized.

True Believers is an adaptation of the Doug Richardson novel about the intersecting paths of a senator with White House aspirations, a woman who wants to have a child and a death row inmate who thinks he is a messiah who must carry on his bloodline. Richardson wrote the script. The project is set up at Bruce Willis' Cheyenne Enterprises.

"We flew Hideo in, and just in one meeting he came up with fresh ideas which helped the script," said Willis' partner, Arnold Rifkin. "He showed the same intuition and intelligence for suggestive fright that we saw in 'The Ring' and 'Chaos.' We are glad to be first to utilize that gift in a studio film."

Nakata's Chaos was optioned by Universal for a drama that will be directed by Sexy Beast helmer Jonathan Glazer, with Benicio del Toro attached to star. His Dark Water was optioned by Bill Mechanic's Disney-based Pandemonium.

Animated Snake Plissken Project Details
A Coming Attractions source, reportedly working on the Snake Plissken animated project, passed along some info.

First announced in the summer of 2002, the anime movie is one of three new projects featuring John Carpenter's post-apocalytic character first seen in Escape From New York. Hurricane Comics will release the first issue of John Carpenter's Snake Plissken Chronicles this spring, the start of an ongoing comic book series chronicling the adventures of Snake the day after the conclusion of Escape From New York. Also in development is a video game. Star Kurt Russell has agreed to lend his voice to both the anime movie and the video game.

The anime will be directed by Mamoru Oshii and created by Production IG, the creators of the internationally known anime film Ghost in the Shell.

Corona was also told one rumor that may (or may not) come to pass: John Carpenter may be lending his voice to one of the anime's main characters.

Director Tapped for Raimi-Produced Boogeyman
According to The Hollywood Reporter (via Zen) Ghost House Pictures have tapped Mendhi Norowzian to direct the horror film Boogeyman. The film will focus on a man who returns home to face a troubled and haunted past. All of his trauma was centered in his bedroom and he now must face an "entity," which may or may not be real. Norowzian will work from a script by Eric Kripke, Juliet Snowden and Stiles White. Sam Raimi and Rob Tapert are producing, while Steve Hein and Gary Bryman are executive producing.

Letter from May Composer
We got some great feedback from Jaye Barnes-Luckett, the composer and soundtrack supervisor for the indie horror flick May. [Recently reviewed by Ray Garton. Click here for review.] His letter gives us some very cool insight into the making of the flick.

Hiya, Ray:

I recently read your review of MAY, and I wanted to thank you for your kind words about the movie and the music, as well. I thought you brought up a good observation, when you talked about how you wished you could have seen more about what made May bizarre in the first place. We originally did have more to that effect, but I think our fairly conservative producers (it's a wonder why they picked up Lucky's script in the first place, but I'm glad they did) weren't really having any of that. I didn't see all of that footage either, so maybe it just didn't work as well when they shot it. I dunno. The first draft or two of the script, had an entire childhood sequence, where we actually go to see the making of May's "psyche" I guess you could call it. That stuff was shot. There was also more of when May was older, in the original drafts (she was originally in college) and had some interaction with her mom who was quite scary... Anyway, I thought it was pretty sharp of you to realize that was missing, because it was something we did have in there originally. Well, again, thanks for the good words.

Take care.
- Jaye

Werewolf by Night, Man-Thing, Punisher & More
Comics2Film reports Marvel's Avi Arad talked to reporters for E! Online and dished some info on a number of Marvel film projects.

Michael Tolkin who penned Robert Altman's The Player will be writing a draft of the Johanathan Hensleigh helmed adaptation of The Punisher.

Arad also said that an Oscar nominated screenwriter is rewriting the script for Werewolf By Night.

A Deathlok film is in development with Paramount. Deathlok is one of Marvel's cyborg characters. The film tells the story of a man being turned into a computer.

He also commented on one of Marvel's smaller budget films, an adaptation of Man-Thing. Man-Thing was a swamp monster whose touch burned anyone who was afraid of him. He guarded a mystical swamp deep in the heart of the Florida Everglades. Brett Leonard (Lawnmower Man) will direct the movie. The film will focus more on the title character's status as an urban legend. The production is slated to begin within several months in New Orleans.

Beyond Re-Animator Street Date
Fangoria reports Lions Gate has confirmed that Beyond Re-Animator will debut on DVD Sept. 23. The Brian Yuzna-directed film finds Herbert West (Jeffrey Combs) in jail, continuing his bizarre experiments. There's no word yet on whether the film, which looks to be an old-fashioned gorefest, will be released as an R or unrated (it has yet to go to the ratings board) or what extras will be on the DVD. While the movie won't get a theatrical release, those attending this month's American Film Market in Santa Monica, CA can catch the sequel when it screens there Feb. 22 and 25.

Session 9 Director Lands Major Studio Gig
According to The Hollywood Reporter (via Fango), Session 9 director Brad Anderson will make his major-studio directing debut with Warner Bros.' Lucid, a psychological thriller he'll helm from his own script. The movie focuses on a woman who can't distinguish real life from her dream world.

Tim Burton Teams Up with Dark Horse for Figure Line

Sideshow Debuting Black Lagoon Creature at Toy Fair
Sideshow Collectibles announced they will debut, possibly the most "fan requested" Universal Monster figure, The Creature from the Black Lagoon at the NY International Toy Fair next week. Classic monster fans will now be able to add this popular monster to their collection with the release of a 12" figure based on the famous 1954 Universal film classic.

The Creature from the Black Lagoon was created by sculptor, Oluf W. Hartvigson. The limited edition figure will have over 20 points of articulation, and will come in the classic Sideshow full color collector's display box, with front flap honoring the original Creature from the Black Lagoon movie poster. It will retain for $45.

The Creature from the Black Lagoon figure will be showcased at the Sideshow Collectibles booth during The NY International Toy Fair from February 16th through 19th along with other 2003 releases - The Creature Walks Among Us, The Werewolf of London, The Mummy and The Mole Man.

Possible Buffy & Angel Crossover
Sci Fi Wire reports the WB and UPN will allow a crossover between Angel and Buffy the Vampire Slayer if Buffy ends this year, sources told TV Guide Online. Angel (David Boreanaz) would appear in the series finale of Buffy in May, should the series end its run then.

Boreanaz wouldn't confirm the crossover, but he did tell the site that "fans would enjoy that. It would be really nice for them." So far, no decision has been made on whether Buffy will end this year, though rumors of a crossover lend weight to that speculation. SCI FI Wire earlier reported that Buffy's Alyson Hannigan (Willow) would cross over on the March 26 episode of Angel.

As far as the future of Angel, a WB spokesperson told TV Guide that a decision will come in May. Boreanaz told the site that he is "confident that we'll have another season. I think that the show has done remarkably well for the network, and we've proven to have a [loyal] following."

Savini Talks a Bit of Zombie
Lights Out reports an Ain't It Cool News tipster recently attended a Q & A with make-up effects master, Tom Savini, at a film school in Orlando. Here's the scoop he brought back about another Living Dead sequel:

"Tom told us that he had heard the rumors that 20th century fox had backed Romero with $20 million and that Fox Searchlight was backing the film. Also, the budget isn't $20 million dollars. He said George is the kind of guy who walks out of meetings with studio executives, because he thinks they are just bullshit slingers. So discussions are still on going and nothing is set. So I wouldn't get hopes up yet for a big budget zombie movie. He said that originally executives wanted the movie called 'Night of the Living Dead Reckoning' and Romero wouldn't have it."

Savini also commented on the fact that certain scenes from Resident Evil were ripped straight from Day Of The Dead and how the film "wasn't the answer he was looking for."

Extraordinary Gentlemen Trailer Online
There's a teaser trailer online now for the film adaptation of Alan Moore's League of Extraordinary Gentlemen. Looks pretty cool, go give it a look here.

No New Carpenter Trilogy
Creature Corner contacted John Carpenter's folks and found out the rumor about a new trilogy of films from him is total crap. So ignore that one.

Make Mine Marvel Movies - Apparently Lots of 'em!
Lots of Marvel movie news. DH says that while talking with The Chicago Sun-Times, Marvel Comics head Avi Arad confirmed the Spider-Man sequel, The Punisher, Namor: The Sub-Mariner and either The Fantastic Four or Ghost Rider are all set for release next year. Arad also indicated that not only would he love to cast George Clooney as Fantastic Four's leader Mr. Fantastic, but he'd also like to see Tom Cruise as Iron Man.

Arad confirmed there's a Daredevil sequel waiting to be green-lighted should the first film prove to be a hit, and talks with Jennifer Garner to spin off her character Elektra into her own film franchise seem to be going well: "It's in the script phase, but Jennifer says she's already attached. She had a great experience making Daredevil and is looking forward to returning to the role."

Guessing that's a bit of a giveaway that the Bullseye/Elektra storyline in this movie does not reflect the conclusion of the Bullseye/Elektra storyline in the original comics.

Hellboy Movie Updates
DH reports Countingdown talked with creator Mike Mignola in a pre-production interview and revealed the look of one of the two main characters in the Hellboy movie will differ quite a bit from the comic.

"Hellboy is probably as close to the comic as he can be, and still work on film," Mignola said. "Abe Sapien is quite a bit different, and the fact that Wayne Barlowe designed the creature makes it a very different thing. Its a different thing, because the comic is my vision, the film is Guillermo del Toro's vision, so we see eye to eye 95% of the time. He knows how to make movies, and on a good day I know how to make comics. I'm very happy to defer to him when it comes to film."

It also seems the father and son relationship between Professor Bruttenholm and Hellboy is played up much stronger in the script: "It was only hinted as maybe for like twp panels in the comic, but it's really the heart of the movie and I think it's the best thing in the film. The relationships between Hellboy and Liz, and Hellboy and Bruttenholm, but Hellboy and Bruttenholm is really to me the thing I love the most in the movie."

Del Toro confirmed both actors Larry Miller and Victoria Smurfit have had to leave the project due to scheduling conflicts with Jeffrey Tambor and Biddy Hodson replacing them.

New Line Horror Release Dates
Fangoria reports New Line has set an Aug. 15 release date for Freddy vs. Jason, which was previously mentioned for a June 13 release, and later a fall debut. In addition, New Line has slated the supernaturally tinged thriller The Butterfly Effect (written and directed by the Final Destinatioin 2 scripting team of J. Mackye Gruber and Eric Bress) for Sept. 19.

Highwaymen, director Robert Harmon's (The Hitcher) return to cinematic road rage, remains unscheduled but is still set to hit sometime in 2003.

Paramount Latest to Consider Japanese Horror Remake
Reuters reports Paramount Pictures is in negotiations with scribe Massy Tadjedin to pen The Eye, a remake of the hit Asian horror-thriller. The studio acquired the remake rights last year for Paramount-based Cruise/Wagner to produce. The story concerns a blind woman who undergoes a corneal transplant that restores her sight but also allows her to see unearthly things.

Project's prospects have been heightened after DreamWorks' success with The Ring.

Tadjedin and brother Amir Tadjedin penned Leopold Bloom, a Joseph Fiennes-Elizabeth Shue starrer for U.K.-based Scala Prods. She's also rewritten thriller The Jacket for Mandalay Pictures.
