Sigourney Gives a Teeny Bit on The Village
Empire talked with Sigourney Weaver about her role in M. Night Shyamalan¹s The Village, due out later this year.

"I play Alice Hunt who's a widow - she's one of a group called The Elders of the village. It's a kind of a communal village and there's a group of people who run things very democratically. I'm Joaquin Phoenix's mother and he plays a very extraordinary, shy young man who's also very brave. It's a fabulous story on a lot of levels - not just scary but very interesting. I had nightmares for two weeks just reading it - so I think it's going to be very scary!"

That may not seem like a lot of information, but with the plot under more wraps than a tortilla factory it¹s all we¹re going to get. Still, anyone who guessed that there might be an atmosphere of dread and menace, and maybe a reality-warping twist in the last act, probably wouldn¹t be too far wrong.

They also talked with her a little about Alien. When asked about John Hurt¹s chest-bursting scene, she had this to say.

"People talk about special effects and everything, but what amazed me about that day was John's acting. He just totally committed to that moment and seemed in so much pain that I totally forgot I was making a movie! He's just dazzling in his versatility..."

"I didn't think of [Alien] as a groundbreaking idea because I had studied a lot of theatre and it was like Shakespeare - it was my chance to play Henry V. It was just a good, shrewd idea and I just feel very lucky that I managed to snag the part. The biggest fear I had with Alien was that it would be terrible."

Eli Roth Talks Next Project
Cabin Fever's Eli Roth talked with Empire magazine about his next flick, an upcoming collaboration with Donnie Darko writer and director, Richard Kelly.

"Oh yeah, I'm working on another freakishly gory horror film, with Richard Kelly. This one's called The Box we're writing it together, he's going to produce it and I'm going to direct it. It's based on a Richard Matheson story called Button Button."

Previously made into a Twilight Zone episode, The Box is a story about a couple who find a box on their doorstep one night. Whoever pushes the button on the box receives instant wealth, but at the cost of a stranger's life.

Bride of Frankenstein Scribes/Director Tapped
Variety reports Shari Springer Berman and Robert Pulcini, the team behind American Splendor, are in negotiations to rewrite and direct a remake of Bride of Frankenstein for Universal Pictures, produced by Imagine Entertainment's Brian Grazer.

Bride would be the duo's first deal since they were Oscar-nominated last week for adapted screenplay for Splendor. Berman and Pulcini join the project with a mandate to re-imagine the 1935 horror pic.

Buoyed by Stephen Sommers' successful resuscitation of U's classic Mummy franchise, the studio has been eager to redo Bride of Frankenstein. But in bringing in the Splendor duo, U is pursuing a different track for Bride than the futuristic FX-driven actioner tack taken by previous writers on the project.

Berman and Pulcini would reportedly start from scratch and script a character-driven horror pic more akin to Rosemary's Baby. Their concept for Bride is set in contemporary Gotham, centered on a young woman attending college. After being haunted by someone else's memories, she gradually discovers that she died and was then unnaturally brought back to life.

MGM to Revive Orion Pictures as Genre Outlet?
THR reports Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer is looking to resurrect Orion Pictures as a genre arm to complement its United Artists specialty films unit. The studio wants an outside partner to join it in reviving the once high-profile banner for theatrical and video releases, company spokesman David Bloom said Thursday. Among Orion's past releases are The Silence of the Lambs and the Robocop series.

Orion Pictures was founded in 1978 by a group of former UA executives who sought to continue the UA tradition of allowing filmmakers a relatively free hand. The company was forced to declare bankruptcy in 1992, and MGM acquired the Orion name and its film library in 1997.

MGM's spokesman further emphasized Thursday that the studio is "very happy" with United Artists, and that it is not looking to spin UA off despite rumors to the contrary.

The relationship between the UA and Orion divisions under the proposed plan would be similar to the relationship between the Walt Disney Co.'s Miramax Films and its Dimension genre arm, home of such hits as the Scream franchise.

In recent years, UA has released both arthouse fare as well as teen-skewing horror films -- a situation that could be clarified if Orion were to take over the latter types of film.

Hills Have Eyes Remake Details
Variety's Michael Fleming reports Dimension Films co-chairman Bob Weinstein will remake The Hills Have Eyes. Wes Craven, who wrote and directed the 1977 original, will produce with his Craven-Maddalena Films partner Marianne Maddalena and Peter Locke. Alexandre Aja and Gregory Levasseur will write the script and Aja will direct.

Original film centered on a hapless family that makes a detour to a desolated desert to visit a silver mine they've inherited. There they are preyed upon by a disturbing clan.

Aja and Levasseur are the French fright film tandem behind Haute Tension and Furia, which the duo wrote and Aja directed. The team recently signed with WMA, which set up their studio debut film. Dimension co-presidents Andrew Rona and Brad Weston and exec Nick Phillips will oversee what becomes the second significant '70s horror remake deal for the studio.

Paramount Deal for McCammon's Mine?
Variety reports (via Hunter Goatley of www.RobertMcCammon.com) Frank Darabont's production company has mentioned Robert McCammon's Mine as a possible film in a new development deal with Paramount. Darabont has completed a screenplay based on Mine, and the screenplay was being shopped around the studios. The mention in the article is:

The other Darkwoods projects include a trio that Darabont also would be likely to direct --- biopics "Tokyo Rose" and "Rivers in the Desert: William Mulholland and the Inventing of Los Angeles," along with thriller "Mine."

Cast Additions for The Grudge
Zen reports Bill Pullman, Clea DuVall and William Mapother are joining the cast of the thriller The Grudge. The three will star alongside Sarah Michelle Gellar, Jason Behr and Kadee Strickland who were previously announced. The film is a remake of Takashi Shimizu's Japanese film JU-ON. The story is about a supernatural curse that passes from person to person, causing multiple murders.

DuVall and Mapother will play a couple living in Tokyo that experience the curse of their home's previous owner. Pullman will play an English professor. Takashi Shimizu will direct from a script by Stephen Susco. Raimi will produce with Rob Tapert and Taka Ichise.

Naomi Watts Joins Peter Jackson's King Kong
Empire Magazine reports Naomi Watts spoke to E! News Daily at the BAFTA lunch in LA and said that she is to star in Peter Jackson's King Kong remake. "I will sit in the hand of King Kong," Watts said. She also passed along filming is due to begin this August.

Peter Jackson added that he plans to make Kong "as a drama ...not as a fantasy...and explore what would really happen in that situation." Speaking to Empire last month, Jackson said "We did a script about five years ago that we are going to revise and change. When we¹re done with Return of the King, we are going back to start work on a new screenplay. It¹s set in 1933, the year the original was made, so it has a period setting. It has to have a sense of reality an island with dinosaurs and a gorilla, set a little bit in the past to try and make people believe it."

On the subject of Everyone¹s Favourite Trilogy, Jackson also released a few details about the Return of the King Extended Edition, due out next November. We already know that Saruman¹s scenes will be cut back in, and there will be new scenes set in the Houses of Healing between some heroes injured in the fighting, and with the Mouth of Sauron at the Black Gates. With so much to add back in, Jackson is looking at a four hour, ten minute running time, bringing the total for the trilogy to a whopping eleven hours, twenty-two minutes.

Koontz Writing Modern Frankenstein TV Series
Reuters reports the Frankenstein monster will walk again, this time on cable TV, and he will come back to life as a good guy crime fighter. The USA Network has ordered production of a pilot episode for a contemporary drama series based on the Mary Shelley horror classic and Dean Koontz has been tapped to write and produce the series.

It's expected to go into production in April and debut as early as the fourth quarter of this year, said Jeff Wachtel, USA's executive vice president of original programming. Wachtel also said the project, tentatively titled "Frankenstein," is conceived as a six-episode "limited series" that could come back for additional seasons, depending on how successful it is and the creative direction it takes.

In the modern update conceived by Koontz for USA's pilot, Dr. Frankenstein and his creature, kept alive for 200 years by the scientist's genetic manipulations, have essentially reversed roles. The good doctor has become evil, and the "monster" has become the good guy.

"The monster has been spending 200 years living on the fringes of human society and learned how to get along and had a lot of contact with people, and over these two centuries has become not only a human being in his soul, but kind of an evolved human being," Wachtel told Reuters.

The update opens with a female homicide detective encountering the monster as she investigates a series of gruesome murders with the creature's help, Wachtel said.

Joining Koontz as executive producers will be six-time Oscar nominee Martin Scorsese and TV veteran Tony Krantz, whose credits include 24 and Felicity. It will be Scorsese's first venture into scripted series television. Last year he produced a documentary miniseries on blues music for PBS. Marcus Nispel, the filmmaker behind the recent remake of the cult horror classic "The Texas Chainsaw Massacre," will direct the pilot.

Cameron Directing Untitled Big Budget Sci-Fi Film
Titanic writer/director James Cameron is preparing a follow-up feature, six years after his maritime saga smashed worldwide box office records, Daily Variety reported in its Thursday edition. Cameron hopes to start shooting the untitled project, which he described as "a big-budget science-fiction film with a pile of special effects" later this year for 20th Century Fox with high-definition 3-D video cameras, the trade paper said.

Cameron announced his plans to sci-fi buffs on Tuesday during a question-and-answer session following a special Hollywood screening of his 1991 blockbuster Terminator 2: Judgment Day.

Secret Window Release Date Moved Up
Coming Soon reports Sony Pictures is releasing the Johnny Depp thriller Secret Window six weeks earlier than originally planned. The film, based on a novella by Stephen King, is moving from an April 23 release date to March 12.

Jeff Blake, vice chairman of Sony Pictures Entertainment and president of worldwide marketing and distribution, said "we just had our first screening of the film, and it went great; Johnny Depp is terrific in this film. 'Secret Window' should be finished and ready to go for a March 12 release date, which looks like a very good slot."

Sony will kick-off the media campaign for the film on February 1 with a spot during Super Bowl XXXVIII. The film is expected to receive a PG-13 rating.

WB Picks Up Dark Shadows Series Remake
Sci Fi Wire reports Producer John Wells (The West Wing, ER) is developing a new version of the 1960s vampire soap opera Dark Shadows for The WB. But WB honcho Jordan Levin told reporters that he doesn't believe the supernatural series will conflict with The WB's other vampire show, Angel. "I don't think the two shows will be competing against one another," Levin said at the network's winter press tour in Hollywood.

Levin added, "We haven't seen Dark Shadows yet. What was interesting about that is that anytime John Wells walks in the door and says he's excited about wanting to do something differently‹in this case, a gothic soap opera, you know, based on Dark Shadows‹I think that's something you're obviously going to pay attention to. I think that two shows could co-exist. One is an action-adventure franchise, and one is a very gothic soap opera franchise."

Angel co-creator Joss Whedon, meanwhile, expressed surprise when informed that another bloodsucker series was in the frog network's docket. "I was not aware of that," he said, with typical tongue in cheek. "I quit." He added seriously, "You know, clearly, I'm the 97th guy to use the vampire metaphor to tell stories. I have no problem with there being a 98th. ... But at least it's not an important, successful producer."

More Cast Joining Dark Water
Variety reports that Tim Roth and Dougray Scott have joined Jennifer Connelly in the cast of Dark Water, the story of a woman who moves with her young daughter into a new apartment and begins experiencing aquatic signs that the place is haunted.

Walter Salles is directing this remake of Hideo Nakata¹s Japanese flick. Production is currently underway in Toronto and New York.

Scribe Tapped for Blood and Chocolate
Variety reports Ehren Kruger, scribe of The Ring, has come aboard Blood and Chocolate for MGM. This adapts Annette Curtis Klause's popular teen horror novel, which portrays a secret society of werewolves living in modern society. Original story, which will be reworked by Kruger, follows the difficult romance between a young woman werewolf and a human boy.

In addition to the deal to pen the script, which reaches into seven figures, Kruger will for the first time step into an exec producer role, setting him up for the largest payday of his career.

Onboard to helm is Sanji Senaka, who will make his feature debut on the pic. Daniel Bobker will produce. MGM is readying "Blood" for a summer start.

Senaka, who has previously used only his first name professionally, has become best known for the distinctive and surreal imagery he uses in his music videos such as Tori Amos' "A Sorta Fairytale."

Bobker is producing two other Kruger-penned pics: Terry Gilliam-helmed The Brothers Grimm and Universal's thriller The Skeleton Key.

Kruger became a sought-after scribe when The Ring grossed $129 million domestically for DreamWorks. He was quickly booked for other work, including The Ring 2, which is readying for a spring start, and The Talisman, the Stephen King adaptation being produced by Steven Spielberg for DreamWorks and Universal. Talisaman is set to shoot this summer.

Blondie's New Album Pays Tribute to Joey Ramone
Not horror news but we love Deborah Harry (bordering on our Adrienne Barbeau obsession) so here 'tis anyway: Rolling Stone reports Blondie will release their second post-reunion album, The Curse of Blondie, in March on Sanctuary Records. In April, the band plans to tour the U.S. [And if all you know of Blondie is Call Me, then please check out their early CBGB's scene stuff.]

On the album, Harry also does a bit of reflecting on the legendary New York punk scene in the jangly pop tune "Hello Joe," a song she wrote for fellow CBGB vet Joey Ramone after his death in 2001.

"I had been to Joey's wake, the funeral and the cemetery, and it was just all of the people and friends and musicians from the CB scene," she says. "Some of them I hadn't seen for more than ten years, and it was just so moving. Joey was always a sweetheart. I really loved the band obviously. To have him go like that and then right afterwards Dee Dee, it's just completely shocking. So I wanted to write something. I know it doesn't make much sense because the music doesn't really have anything to do with what the Ramones do, but it's a tribute."

New Swamp Thing Movie Details
In an interview with UGO, comics legend Len Wein talked a bit about writing the script for a new Swamp Thing movie Joel Silver is producing.

"I have a first draft and doing some modifications now. I'm expecting to hand it in soon. Then it goes to Warner Bros and we'll see what happens then."

In describing his approach, Wein said "It's a horror movie. The new Man-Thing movie sounds just like what the old Swamp Thing was. I think it has a budget of $5 million. The Swamp Thing has a budget of way beyond that. When I had my first meeting with Joel the first thing he said was 'No guy in a rubber suit.' Swamp Thing will be all CGI."

Wein also mentioned that Bernie Wrightson is involved in the design work.

Grendel Movie in Development
Dark Horse Comics President Mike Richardson hinted about it to Cinescape during an interview last November, and now it's front page news in The Hollywood Reporter today -- Matt Wagner's Grendel is in development as a live-action film.

First published by Comico in the '80s and now residing at Dark Horse, Wagner's story is about different incarnations of a masked hero throughout different time periods. The first Grendel arc was about Hunter Rose, a young man who wore the black and white Grendel costume. Rose's successor was Christine Spar, Rose's adopted granddaughter. Spar will be the Grendel character used for the movie, seen in the "The Devil Inside" story arc.

John Wells Productions is developing the film in association with Dark Horse Entertainment and Arsenal Entertainment. The movie's screenplay is being penned by Carl Lund.

Salem's Lot First Look
This week's TV Guide has a first look photo of Rob Lowe in the new Salem's Lot miniseries remake. Costarring is Donald Sutherland, James Cromwell and Rutger Hauer.

At more than $12 million, executive producer Mark Wolper says it's worth it since "the sense of horror and terror that we can portray now is so much stronger than it was then."

Not sure we agree that special effects guarantee a sense of terror (anyone remember feardotcom) but they did load this one with 500 visual effects.
