Underworld Evolution Set Visit
By Valarie Thorpe

Filming for Underworld Evolution took place earlier this year in Vancouver, British Columbia, and Really Scary was able to sneak on set to insure that Kate Beckinsale was properly attired for the vampires vs. werewolves sequel. We’re extremely happy to report…it’s still all about the leather.

Underworld Evolution continues the saga of war between the Death Dealers and the Lycans. The film traces the beginnings of the ancient feud between the two tribes as Selene (Kate Beckinsale) and Michael (Scott Speedman), the lycan hybrid, try to discover the secrets of their bloodlines.

And ok, we didn’t exactly sneak onto set – Sony graciously hosted us along with other genre press for an on set visit. We got a look at the sets (think futuristic retro-fitted tallship –very cool), watched some filming and got a chance to chat with director Len Wiseman, stars Scott Speedman and Kate. And  Kate did the on set interview with us in the full leather outfit. Yep, our job kicks mucho asso.

Knowing that Kate’s now married to Wiseman, we decided to be smartasses and ask her if there was something in particular about her experience in making the first film that drew her to making the sequel. She deadpanned “No” and then started laughing as she looked over to Wiseman. She had us at no. Great leather and a sense of humor. Damn that Wiseman and his good fortune all to hell.

Between the first Underworld, Van Helsing and Underworld Evolution, Kate’s an old hand now at action flicks, which still surprises her.

“I had never done a film…where I'd actually, you know, been sort of tough and active. I'm a very un-athletic sort of rather wet, frightened person in life and so it was, it was quite a challenge for me to…play an action heroine and pull off all that training when, you know, I can't catch a ball if it's coming my way.

Underworld Evolution poster"I was paralyzed with terror the first time.  I just felt every single time I did anything I was going to just get busted and all the stunt guys would be like ‘Oh, the girl, you know.’   Um, I mean I really did.  I had to be really coached out of running like this,” Kate said while demonstrating flailing hands.

Wiseman laughed and said, “I would always say  ‘with the hands and all.’”

“You know, gentle reminders of  ‘you're not in Peter Pan right now, you know’,” Kate said.  “’Look tough, look tough.’  That kind of seems to have just absorbed now”

Speaking of the flick’s action, Wiseman also passed along that the opening scene kicks off with a medieval sequence that gives us Viktor and his team of death dealers in full armor on horseback battling the werewolves.

Actor Scott Speedman then got one of those questions that demonstrated how tough it can be for interviewers and interviewees when you’re talking about a movie that isn’t complete, the media hasn’t seen and the cast can’t talk about too much without revealing too much. He was asked what his character’s major role in the sequel is? We’ll run the following exchange between Scott, Len and Kate verbatim.

“Oh crap, I don't know,” Scott said.  Everyone laughed. “Jeez, I don't know, I don't know.  What would you say?  I don't know.”

Kate asked, “What are we allowed to say?”

Wiseman jumped in, “No, no, I mean--   Your, your, your major role has, has, uh, some things we don't want to--   don't want to give away.”

“Yeah,” Scott said.

Len added, “But it's, it’s a bit of a, um, he's one of the puzzle pieces I guess would best, best put it, I think.”

“Yeah, I really don't know how to answer that question.  I don't really, sorry,” Scott said.

Kate did provide a hint though when she said, “He provides most of the nipples in the movie.”

Scott elaborated, “I'm naked a lot, which is good.”

Other than being naked, Scott also said he’s enjoyed making the sequel. “It's more fun for me this time.  It's a lot more dynamic and I feel a lot more like less watching the action going on around me and reacting and being kind of a pedestrian in all the action, but a lot more dynamic of a character.  So it's a lot more fun that way.”

Similarly, Kate also viewed filming the sequel from another angle. “I was in a slightly different position than I've ever been in before because obviously I've not been married to the director.  So I started being involved in the process just in terms of hearing about the development, very early on, which was a great treat.  It doesn't usually happen.  And…not that I had any kind of, you know, Yoko Ono sort of input at that point,” she said, cracking us all up.  “One of the reasons that we did end up running off and getting married was that we do kind of have a very similar take on things, and I think we both felt at the end of Underworld that it would be quite nice to…slightly kind of change the energy.”

So to recap, Kate’s in leather and Scott’s naked a lot. What more could you ask for?  Look for Underworld Evolution to hit theaters Jan. 20.
