She began her career in horror movies and later proved to be a versatile comic actress, as well as a successful author of children's books. She recently announced that she has ended her acting career.

France Minister of Culture Bars Minors from Saw 3

Reuters reports France's minister of culture decided on Tuesday to bar minors from seeing Saw 3 after personally viewing the film which he said contained "incessant and unbearable sadism."

In a statement, Culture Minister Renaud Donnedieu de Vabres said he had watched it following a decision by the film classification commission to restrict it to over-18s. He said "the violence and incessant and unbearable sadism of scenes explicitly linked to physical and moral torture fully justified the decision to ban the film (for minors)."

Sci Fi Channel Producing Wizard of Oz Spinoff Mini

Variety reports The Wizard of Oz is getting a makeover, morphing into a six-hour mini called Tin Man, described as an edgy science-fiction fantasy from Sci Fi Channel at a production cost of $19 million.

"Our goal is to take 'Wizard of Oz' to the next level and make it relevant, modern and fresh to a new generation," said Dave Howe, general manager of Sci Fi Channel. The producer is Robert Halmi's RHI Entertainment, which produced a previous mini for Sci Fi, the 2004 Legend of Earthsea.

The writers of Tin Man, Steven Long Mitchell and Craig Van Sickle, also will serve as co-exec producers with Robert Halmi Sr. and Robert Halmi Jr. RHI has begun the search for a director and a cast, with production slated to begin in Vancouver early next year for a proposed air date on Sci Fi of December 2007.

Frank Miller Says He'll Co-Direct Sin City 2

Sci Fi Wire reports Frank Miller, who wrote and co-directed Sin City based on his graphic novels of the same name, said that he plans to co-direct the upcoming sequel, Sin City 2, with Robert Rodriguez, despite rumors to the contrary. "Yes and yes," he said in an interview following a preview screening of footage of 300, another upcoming film based on his work.

"We have all kinds of technical things we want to do, but there's a major story called A Dame to Kill for [which was, fittingly, the second Sin City story and is a prequel of sorts to The Hard Goodbye] that we're going to adapt," Miller said. "That'll include a new femme fatale and other characters." Rodriguez has reportedly spoken with Angelina Jolie about playing Ava, ex-lover of Clive Owen's Dwight.

"There are a number of short stories that will be interlaced between them and a brand-new story that I'm just developing right now featuring Nancy Callahan [Jessica Alba] and her reaction to the death of John Hartigan [played in the first film by Bruce Willis, who likely won't appear in the sequel]," Miller added. Sin City 2 is tentatively slated for production and release in 2007.

Night of the Living Dead in 3-D

Staci Wilson over at About: Horror & Suspense Movies reports a 3-D remake of Night of the Living Dead is being shown as a midnight movie at select theaters. In this brand new chiller, Barb and her brother Johnny arrive late for the burial of their aunt — and walk straight into a nightmare. With zombies on her heels, Barb flees the cemetery and is rescued by Ben, a local college student.

The two seek refuge in the nearby farmhouse of the Cooper family, where the laid-back residents aren't remotely prepared to have their lives turn into a horror movie. But Barb is destined for an even grimmer confrontation… with a pyrophobic mortician.

    Director Talks Angle on Watchmen

JoBlo reports Zack Snyder has talked up a certain approach he'll be taking as helmer of Watchmen, which is apparently to be refreshingly faithful to the source material. He tells IGN a lot more about his plans. First off, sequels are reportedly not on Snyder's agenda, which can't be anything but a good thing. That said, there's some stuff from the graphic novel that may not make the final cut due to time constraints. The screenplay is "so long in fact that when we turned it in, we turned 'The Black Freighter' stuff in as a separate script so as not to scare them too much. We were like, 'Here's your script. Oh, here's your other script!' They were like, 'Oh, great!'... I want 'The Black Freighter' stuff in it. It will all depend on how [the studio] likes it. I feel like they don't really question it, like, 'Why, what is this?' But we've designed the movie so that it works without it." Snyder does plan on an extended cut for DVD.

Lead Role Cast for Sarah Connor Chronicles

Lena Headey has landed the leading role in the Fox pilot The Sarah Connor Chronicles, based on the Terminator movies.

According to Variety, Warner Bros. TV series will continue the Terminator movie franchise storyline by focusing on Sarah and her son John as they fight attackers from the future in present-day Los Angeles.

Vertigo Producing Horror Remake of Filipino Sigaw

Variety reports Vertigo Entertainment will produce The Echo, a remake of Filipino title Sigaw.

Helmer-director Yam Laranas will reprise his role behind the camera and shoot from an English-language screenplay by Eric Bernt (The Hitcher). Lensing begins in March in Gotham. Story involves an ex-con who becomes trapped in a cursed apartment when he tries to intervene in an abusive situation with the neighbors.

"We love the Stanley Kubrick style that Yam Laranas achieved on such a small budget and with almost no special effects," said Producer Tyler Mitchell. "Sigaw is a really tight, contained psychological thriller. We want to give him a bigger stage on which to perform."

Original pic was made in the Tagalog language on a budget of $300,000. It preemed in the Metro Manila Festival and screened at the Fantasporto fest in Portugal and last year's Screamfest in L.A. Vertigo acquired the rights from Regal Entertainment. Vertigo previously was behind successful remakes including The Ring and The Grudge. Company recently ruled the U.S. box office when The Departed and Grudge 2 topped the charts.
