    Director Shinya Talks Nightmare Detective

Japanese director Tsukamoto Shinya has offered Rome's new film festival the multi-genre Nightmare Detective, combining horror and whodunnit with social commentary. One of just three Asian films among the 16 in competition at the RomeFilmFest, Nightmare Detective is set alternately in soulless Japanese city streets, cyberspace and the world of dreams -- nightmares, that is.

Police trying to crack the mystery of a series of blood-soaked suicides are spooked when it appears that an Internet predator is involved, someone who can also enter the victims' dreams and get them to kill themselves in their sleep.

AFP talked with Shinya, "In the modern-day Japanese world we are witnessing suicide websites. ... They incite people to commit suicide and finally they end up doing so. My project came out of this idea."

He agreed that the Japanese craze for the highly graphic manga comic books was also a factor. "If you consider my film, and if you consider my generation, you have to consider that we did grow up with mangas. ... I do see reality partly as a manga, and the boundaries between the two worlds often disappears."

The nightmare theme, though, came from the director's childhood fear of falling asleep. He said the resulting nightmares "frightened me, but at the same time they gave me a certain joy as if I were on a roller coaster at a leisure park."

Snoop Dogg's Hood of Horror Premiere at Grauman's

The hip-hop horror Flick Snoop Dogg's Hood of Horror will have a Hollywood premiere as part of Screamfest 2006 on Oct. 18, at Grauman's Mann Chinese 6 Theater. Celebrity red carpet arrivals, including Snoop Dogg and other stars from the film, will begin at 7 p.m., with the festival screening at 7:30 p.m. The film is scheduled to open in theaters nationwide on Nov. 17.

Grudge Sequel Tops Weak Box Office

The Grudge 2 earned less than initially forecast, according to final weekend box office data issued Monday, but still managed to take the top spot with a $20.83 million opening. A day earlier, the film's distributor, Sony Pictures, had estimated a $22 million bow.

The horror sequel has the field almost to itself until Lionsgate releases its splatterfest Saw 3 on October 27. However, if the C-minus audience score reported by exit pollster Cinemascore mean anything, The Grudge 2 is likely to fall pretty severely next weekend. The film was directed by Takashi Shimizu, the Japanese filmmaker who shot the 2004 predecessor -- which opened to $39 million -- as well as its Japanese forerunners.

"Do you know what's Really Scary? You want to forget something. Totally wipe it off your mind. But you never can. It can't go away, you see. And... and it follows you around like a ghost."

--Cordelia Chase, Buffy the Vampire Slayer

'From here on, it gets Really Scary.'
