Nightmare Academy Writer Inks Monster Deal

Variety reports Arrested Development co-exec producer Dean Lorey has made a seven-figure, three-book deal with HarperCollins Children's Books for a fantasy series that starts with Nightmare Academy.

Deal comes a month after Lorey's novel sold to Universal for a live-action film that The Mummy director Steve Sommers will produce with his Sommers Co. partner Bob Ducsay. Lorey is writing the script. Deal was for high six figures.

The novel introduces a boy who learns his bad dreams are opening portals that allow dangerous creatures into the world.

Jolie Signs On for Ayn Rand's Atlas Shrugged

Ok, we admit that this isn't horror news but it does have to do with an amazing book and we already know that the Really Scary crowd is a cerebral one so we wanted to pass this along...oh yea, and it involves a severe hottie. Variety reports Angelina Jolie is set to star in the film adaptation of Ayn Rand's iconic tome Atlas Shrugged for Lionsgate.

Jolie, a longtime fan of Rand's, was eager to play the role of Dagney Taggart, the most powerful female character in any of Rand's books.

A movie version of the Russian-born author's novel, which runs more than 1,100 pages, has been long in the making. For years, producer Al Ruddy tried to bring Atlas Shrugged to the bigscreen, attracting the interest of Clint Eastwood, Robert Redford and Faye Dunaway along the way.

Superman Scribe Directing Trick 'r Treat

Reuters reports Hollywood scribe Mike Dougherty, one-half of the writing duo behind Superman Returns and X2: X-Men United, will make his feature directorial on the horror movie Trick 'r Treat.

The Warner Bros. release will have four interwoven stories that take place on Halloween with such characters as a staid high school principal who is a Halloween serial killer, a college-age virgin seeking that special guy, a woman who hates dressing up for Halloween and whose husband is obsessed with the holiday, and a group of teens who pull a cruel prank.

While filmmaker deals are still being finalized and no cast is in place, the movie has a tentative release date of October 5, 2007. A fall shoot in Vancouver is being eyed.

    Lionsgate Joins Sony/Comcast in Fearnet

Variety reports Lionsgate has come aboard Fearnet, the horror-themed video-on-demand co-venture between Sony Pictures Entertainment and Comcast that's set to launch Oct. 31.

Partnership, said to be in the final stages of negotiation, marries the two biggest producers of horror films to the first network dedicated to the genre. Fearnet is the first VOD offering to emerge from Comcast and Sony, created to draw on the thousands of movies and series brought together from the libraries of Columbia Pictures and MGM in the wake of the Sony/MGM merger.

Through the new deal, channel gets a lock on Lionsgate's immense library of scare pics. Lionsgate has been looking for a focused TV partner to help exploit its library of over 1,000 horror titles -- which include recent hits Saw and Hostel -- since last year.

The movies and series will be free to Comcast's digital subscribers. Company will make money from advertising and from license fees ponied up by other cable ops.
