Del Toro Signs Exec Producing Chilean Horror Tale

Guillermo del Toro has come on board to executive produce Jorge Olguin's horror film The Call of the Sea. The film, which marks Chilean helmer Olguin's third feature, stars Leonor Varela (Innocent Voices) and Santiago Cabrera (Empire). Chile Films is financing. Penned by Olguin, Call of the Sea is based on a legend about a ghost ship that navigates the cold waters of a mysterious Chilean island in search of the souls of local fisherman. The story centers on a marine biologist (Varela) who discovers that many of the legends are related to her family's past.

New Mrs. Voorhees for Friday the 13th Remake?

Our bud Staci over at About Horror reports whispers abound that Patricia Clarkson is in talks with New Line Cinema to take on the role of Pamela Voorhees in the Friday The 13th remake. The script was written by Mark Wheaton (The Messengers) and helmed by Jonathan Liebesman (Texas Chainsaw Massacre: The Beginning).

Director Named for DePalma's Sisters Remake

Variety reports (via DH) Douglas Buck is helming a remake of the Brian DePalma film Sisters with French thesp Lou Doillon joining Chloe Sevigny and Stephen Rea. Production is under way in Vancouver reports Variety.

Script was written by Buck and John Freitas and centers on a young woman, played by Doillon, who leads a disturbingly sheltered existence at the hand of her controlling psychiatrist (Rea). Margot Kidder played the lead role in DePalma's original. A reporter (Sevigny), suspicious of the doctor's motives, gets involved, leading to her witnessing a homicide.

Of his take on Sisters, Buck says: "In the original film, which I love, DePalma chose style over substance. I'm interested in exploring all the other stuff that's there -- the perversity, the tragedy, the sadness. All those character traits make it, to me, more interesting. I want to make the characters more alive."

Comcast & Sony Announce Horror Cable Brand

Reuters reports Comcast Corp. and Sony Pictures Entertainment are scheduled to unveil a joint venture to launch a horror/thriller-themed cable brand at the National Cable & Telecommunications Assn. convention on Monday.

Scheduled to launch next Halloween, the untitled horror venture is the first offshoot of the Comcast-Sony linkage, with library titles including Hostel, The Exorcism of Emily Rose and Panic Room.

"I think it's a great genre when you look at how successful the movies are at the boxoffice and on the retail side," Sony Pictures Television president Steve Mosko said. "It's one that's really been untapped on the channel side."

But the joint venture will not spawn a linear cable channel. Instead, the brand will exist as a collection of video-on-demand offerings free of charge to Comcast digital subscribers. Advertising is included. The company is seeking distribution with other cable operators as well.

In addition, the brand will have a heavy presence on the Internet and wireless platforms. Original programing is expected to become part of the mix eventually, though in smaller formats more conducive to Internet consumption rather than as full-fledged movies or series.
