Wes Craven Says Feast Release Pulled

Wes Craven tells Daniel Robert Epstein and SuicideGirls that there's bad news about last year's Project Greenlight horror flick Feast.

"I just heard yesterday from my producer, Marianne [Maddalena,] that they had pulled it from release, which is very disappointing," Craven said. "All I can say is that whole Weinstein Company now is unsure and in all sorts of stress. Maybe they didn't have enough funds to release it last year or something. I'd seen a cut of it and it was a lot of fun so I hope they do release it this year. It certainly deserves it."

    Director Possibility for Oldboy Remake?

Is there a director for the Oldboy remake lined up? During an interview for SuicideGirls, Daniel Robert Epstein talked with director Justin Lin, who passed along a bit o' news.

"We're just playing around. We went from tacos to burritos but right now we're so far away from it being a reality. I love that film and the only reason I wanted to explore that avenue is because it really spoke to me. I didn't sign on to make a Xerox copy of the original because it's a masterpiece. I wanted to explore other themes within it. If I was going to come close to making a Xerox I hope I have enough sense to stop that process. Oldboy is one of those projects where structurally it's so solid and it brings up so many great themes that you could give it to ten different filmmakers and it would be interesting to see what comes out of each of them.

"So far Universal has been very open to anything. I told them that I'm not signing on unless we're not going to water down the ending. It has always been important to make sure that it's understood up front what we're trying to accomplish."

    Silent Hill Trailer

Love the looks of this one - make sure to check out the trailer for Silent Hill, starring Radha Mitchell (Pitch Black, High Art) and Alice Krige (Deadwood, Ghost Story). Looks like we may have a good horror video game adaptation coming our way. Be sure to keep checking in with Really Scary about this flick. We spent a little time on set early this year and will have some tales to tell down the road.

Company Dumping Genre Video Game Plans

Reuters reports video game publisher Majesco, who invested heavily in a handful of games, including the Hollywood-licensed "Aeon Flux," that crashed and burned at retail is now scrapping plans for several genre games.

One of the canceled projects is Demonik, a video game written by Clive Barker that was to serve as a prequel to a potential film. A source close to the situation said the Barker intellectual property might be picked up by a different company.

Jaws Unleashed, a video game sequel to Steven Spielberg's film, is now slated for a June release. The title had been scheduled to ship in the summer to take advantage of the media blitz surrounding the 30th anniversary of the original film's release, but it has been delayed.

Majesco last month sold off two games related to upcoming Hollywood films for $8 million: Ghost Rider, a virtual sequel to the Nicolas Cage comic book film, and The Darkness, a game based on the Top Cow comic.

Majesco had early success with BloodRayne, its first original console game, which spawned a sequel and a Hollywood movie that flopped at theaters. While producer-director Uwe Boll said a direct-to-video sequel for "BloodRayne" is still a possibility (Universal Studios Home Video will release the first film on DVD in March), it's likely that the video game franchise has seen its end.

    Hostel Sequel Already Greenlit

Variety reports that after a $20 million opening weekend, Screen Gems and Lions Gate are planning a sequel to Hostel, with writer-director Eli Roth in talks to return and steer the second installment. Lions Gate and Screen Gems intend to release the sequel in a year, similar to Lions Gate's successful quick turnaround of Saw and Saw II.

Lions Gate and Screen Gems will have the same partnership arrangement as on the first Hostel, Screen Gems will make the movie, while Lions Gate will release it in the U.S. Screen Gems will retain international theatrical rights, as well as all homevid rights. The two partners will share in the profits after taking their respective distrib fees.

Next Entertainment's Mike Fleiss and Chris Briggs, who originally brought Hostel to Screen Gems and were producers on the film, are in talks to produce the sequel as well. Although Variety says it's not clear whether Hostel exec producer Quentin Tarantino will be back.
