Gunnar Hansen Talks Last Horror & Chainsaw Sally During a recent interview regarding one his latest flicks Murder-Set-Pieces, Gunnar Hansen caught us up on some of his other projects including Last Horror Picture Show, which Robert Englund and Kane Hodder have signed on for, as well as Chainsaw Sally 2 and Apocalypse and the Beauty Queen.
"Last Horror Picture Show has been optioned. Gary Jones, my writing partner, will direct it," Hansen said. "We don't know when it will go into production, but it may be as early as this coming September or November. We wrote it with Robert Englund (Freddy) and Kane Hodder (Jason) in mind to play two of the three killers -- with me as the third. They have both signed on, so we're very excited about making this movie."
And in some great news for Texas Chainsaw Massacre fans, Chainsaw Sally 2 will provide a reunion of sorts.
"Ed (Neal) and Marilyn (Burns) and John Dugan (Grandpa) are all going to be in Chainsaw Sally 2, so we're going to have a chance to work together again," Hansen said.
Another recent film, Apocalypse and the Beauty Queen, has already wrapped and Hansen tells us the producers are working on a theatrical release.
"I worked on this last February in St. Louis. Yes, it's inspired in some ways by the Bathory story. It's a post-apocalypse movie, but not science fiction -- it could be taking place six months from now. I play a burned out ex-con, who is looking after the heroine of the movie. I think it's going to be a very good film..."
Evanescence Rocker Joins Dead and Gone Rowdy rocker Ben Moody, founding member of the band Evanescence, has joined the cast of Dead and Gone. Moody's current single is "Everything Burns," featuring Anastacia, from the summer box office flick Fantastic Four.
The low-budget horror film has a wild script from Harry Shannon and will be directed by Yossi Sasson. Composer Harry Manfredini will score and Michael Knue (Ring 2) will edit. The film is in pre-production in the LA area. Filming begins in October, 2005.

MTV Films Picks Up Dark Horse Comics' Damn Nation Variety reports MTV Films has picked up Damn Nation, buying feature rights to Andy Cosby's Dark Horse comic tale of a vampire takeover of the United States.
MTV will produce Damn Nation along with Michael Aguilar and Dean Georgaris, through their Paramount-based Penn Station shingle, with Michael Richardson and Barry Levine of Dark Horse. David Tischman brought in the project for MTV.
Cosby will pen the screenplay and exec produce with Ross Richie. Paramount will distribute.
The comic, published by Dark Horse as a three-issue mini-series, is set in a United States evacuated due to an attack from vampires that has left the nation suffering from a vampire plague and forced the government to relocate to London as scientists search for a cure.
Cosby told Daily Variety he's looking to reinvigorate the vampire genre by emphasizing the creatures' feral rather than human qualities. "I grew up with a big fear of vampires," he added. "I see them as cunning like jungle cats."
The following is from the Dark Horse site about the comic and creator:
The United States' borders and ports are locked down against a terrible threat. However, the barbed wire and infantries are not positioned to keep an enemy out, but to protect the rest of the world from a vampire plague that's spread over every inch of the country.
Andrew Cosby, the creator of UPN's Haunted and the Sci-Fi network original series Eureka, and producer of the film version of Matt Wagner's Mage, teams with rising star and Eisner Award-nominee J. Alexander (Queen and Country) for a vampire epic of global proportions. Most of the living have fled the U.S., but a group of scientists remain behind, working on a cure. Now that they've succeeded, a military operation is launched from the President's current offices in the U.S. Embassy in London, to save the cure from the encroaching undead-but the real motivations of the military remain in question.

If you had previously added your web site's link on the automated site, please resend us your link (and banner if you have one), and we'll get you hooked up on our regular links page. We'll be doing some work on this in the coming weeks and will get it looking spiffed.
Also, we'll do monkey backflips if you give us a link back on your stellar sites. If we get enough links back, we'll somehow digitally record our monkey backflips and post them here just for you.
Nightmares & Dreamscapes Shooting Down Under The Australian reports the eight-part US mini-series based on short stories in Stephen King's Nightmares and Dreamscapes is to be shot in Victoria, Australia, in what is seen as a major coup for the state's film and television industry.
The multi-million-dollar production, which will be filmed at Central City Studios in Melbourne's Docklands as well as at other locations around the state, is expected to create 150 jobs.
The production will be filmed by Coote-Hayes Productions for the US cable TV network TNT. Coote-Hayes's previous credits include On the Beach, the telemovie Evil Never Dies and the mini-series Salem's Lot (also based on a King novel), all of which were shot in Melbourne.

Irish Filmmakers Get Boost on Low Budget Nailed Ireland's Belfast Telegraph reports a low-budget horror film being shot in Belfast has received a major boost from a top American movie producer. Nailed - written and directed by Belfast locals Stephen McAnena and Adrian O'Connell - came to the attention of Ben Katz, who is currently in Belfast shooting the film Johnny Was.
Katz was so impressed with McAnena's script, he offered to lend several actors to the Belfast-based movie. Charles Porter, Sam Sarpong and Wilson Heredia, are now dividing their time between gangster movie Johnny Was and Nailed, which is being shot in Cavehill, north Belfast.
To facilitate the U.S. actors, the original script had to be quickly rewritten to feature a Brooklyn backdrop, rather than Belfast.
Stephen said: "It's a bit of a psycho-thriller centering on two petty criminals who break into an old house and find a man bandaged up on a bed, being looked after by a sinister carer.
"Things aren't how they seem and start to go wrong for the two main men. There are lots of flashbacks and deja vu and it's all very supernatural.
"I had to turn the script round very quickly but we're delighted that Ben's come on board.
"Hopefully it will be completed and edited by November and then we'll start looking for someone to distribute it."
Deadwood Third Season About to Get Underway This may not categorically be horror news, but it's one of the only reasons to watch television these days so we thought we'd pass it along. Sometime in the next few weeks, production will begin on the third season of Deadwood, the HBO television series set in the Black Hills gold mining town of the 1870s. The new season debuts in 2006.
Producer David Milch reportedly is thinking about adding the character of Wyatt Earp to the cast. Mary Kopco, director of the Adams Museum and House, said Earp spent a winter in Deadwood in 1875 or 1876.
The cast and crew of "Deadwood" have received a batch of Emmy nominations for their second season. Lead actor Ian McShane has been nominated for outstanding actor in a drama series, and the show is up for an Emmy for outstanding drama series. [Source: AP]

Director Nick Palumbo Talks Murder-Set-Pieces Elaine Lamkin talked with director Nick Palumbo (Nutbag) and actor Sven Garrett about their latest film, the controversial Murder-Set-Pieces. You don't want to miss this.
Producer Tells Why Scanner Darkly Pushed Back Sci Fi Wire reports Tommy Pallotta, producer of A Scanner Darkly, said the opening date of the animated film based on the book by Philip K. Dick and directed by Richard Linklater was pushed back from October of this year to next spring to give the animators a realistic time frame in which to complete the film.
"It's so funny, because the studio made up that [original] release date," Pallotta said in an interview at Comic-Con International in San Diego. "They never asked us when it would get done. They had no idea what they were getting from the very get-go. So I read in the trades that Scanner Darkly was going to be released in October of 2005, and I'm going like, 'What? There's no way.' I don't know if it was just sort of like a wish. And they thought, 'OK, if we sort of set this date in, they'll kick it into gear.' But it's a very laborious process."
When Pallotta informed New Line Cinema that the release date would need to be changed, the studio showed confidence in the film by giving the production all the time they needed. "We said if we were to make this date the quality will suffer," he said. "And to [the studio's] credit, they basically said, 'We do not want the quality to suffer. How long do you need?' So we did that, and that was the end of that conversation. So that's really what that was all about. So it's on schedule." A Scanner Darkly is now set to open in March of 2006.

Fox Picks Up Film Rights for Emily the Strange Variety reports Twentieth Century Fox has acquired rights to the character Emily the Strange and will make a feature film that mixes live-action with animation.
We dropped the Emily team a line and Rob Reger, Creator and Monstermind of Emily Strange (kickass job title) and Buzz Parker, Emily Strange Illustrator got back with some more info.
"The movie will be a definitive way to peer into the secret life of Emily the Strange," Reger said. "For now, pay close attention to the new comic book published by Dark Horse, and the website EmilyStrange.com for clues."
Emily the Strange is a rail-thin 13-year-old whose clothes are as black as her hair and as dark as the tone of her adventures. Reger hatched this symbol of anti-cool in 1993 through promotional stickers, skateboards and T-shirts that he distributed from his garage.
"A big screen Emily movie has been in the makes for several years," Parker said. "We're excited that this is one step closer to sur-reality." Emily has grown into a multimillion-dollar industry, including an apparel line, three books published by Chronicle Books and an upcoming quarterly from Dark Horse Comics. Click here for more.

There's also loads of genre happenings today and Sunday. Drop us a line if you're there!
San Diego Comic-Con Update Variety hit this week's Comic-Con and said studios undoubtedly learned a lesson from last year, when fans were outraged that WB touted Batman Begins without any footage and only a video postcard from helmer Christopher Nolan and star Christian Bale. This year, the studio is taking Superman helmer Bryan Singer away from production in Australia with a presentation specially made for Comic-Con.
King Kong is the other highly anticipated flick getting coverage at the con. Peter Jackson is not coming in from the New Zealand "Kong" shoot but is expected to send a series of clips for Comic-Con attendees to see first.
Other projects aimed right at the Comic-Con core audience include WB's V for Vendetta (recently denounced by comic legend Alan Moore, who is also leaving DC over the dispute), Corpse Bride, Sony's Ghost Rider, Paramount's Aeon Flux and Cartoon Network's Adult Swim lineup.
But in a sign of how broad the Comic-Con aud has become, less comic-like fare will be promoted as well, such as New Line's Tenacious D pic, UPN's Veronica Mars and new Fox procedural drama Bones. Only studios not making major presentations are Fox and DreamWorks.
Lions Gate Buying Film Library Variety reports Lions Gate Entertainment is buying Scandinavia's Modern Times Group library, home to 332 titles including Conan the Barbarian and sequels to the Halloween horror franchise. Financial terms were not disclosed Thursday.
Lions Gate prexy Steve Beeks said the acquisition brings the indie studio a "broad range of quality content and valuable long term VOD and TV rights, which further positioned the Lions Gate's library to exploit future technologies."
The titles, which had been culled from a number of libraries including those of Dino De Laurentiis and Vestron, were managed by Modern Times Group subsid Modern Entertainment.
Night Watch U.S. Release Pushed Back Fangoria reports that Fox Searchlight has shifted Night Watch out of its July 29 release slot and rescheduled it for sometime in the fourth quarter of 2005. No official explanation has been given for the switch. Meanwhile, Day Watch, the second in the Russian fantasy/horror trilogy, is currently in postproduction, and the closing chapter, Dusk Watch, will roll soon.
Manga2Movie: Ju-On Director Adapting Parasyte Empire Magazine reports Takashi Shimizu (Ju-On: The Grudge) is prepping an adaptation of the Japanese comic series Parasyte. The books are a sci-fi series by Hatosi Iwaaki, and tell the story of an Earth under attack from alien spores that take over the human body.
The plan is to use both CG and live-action to create realistic looking alien landscapes on Earth, proving that the spores don't just target homo sapiens. Shimizu is currently working on The Grudge 2.

Ennis & Palmiotti Penning Ghost Rider Video Game Marvel's Ghost Rider comic series is spawning not only a feature starring Nicolas Cage, but also a video game. Majesco Entertainment said Tuesday it will release a game next summer to coincide with Sony's movie.
Comic scribes Garth Ennis and Jimmy Palmiotti are penning the game's story, which will pick up after the events in the upcoming film.
The Ghost Rider comic has sold more than 45 million copies since it was introduced in 1972. It revolves around motorcycle stunt rider Johnny Blaze, who makes a deal with Mephistopheles to save his father's life. In exchange, Blaze loses his immortal soul and is destined to ride through the night, avenging evil as the Ghost Rider and never to be reunited with the love of his life.
U.K.-based development studio Climax is working on the new game for PlayStation 2, Xbox and PlayStation Portable platforms. At this time, the game will not feature voices or likenesses from the film's cast. [Source: The Hollywood Reporter]
Casting for Texas Chainsaw Prequel THR reports Jordana Brewster is in negotiations to star in the untitled prequel to the recent remake of The Texas Chainsaw Massacre.
As in the 2003 movie, which grossed more than $80 million domestically, the story revolves around a group of kids who run afoul of chainsaw-wielding psycho Leatherface and his demented family. The story will reveal Leatherface's origins.
Jonathan Liebesman (Darkness Falls) is directing the project for New Line. A late-summer start date in Austin is being eyed.
Brewster's credits include The Fast and the Furious and The Faculty.

Chainsaw Game Controller for Resident Evil 4 NubyTech, a California-based manufacturer of video game accessories, has come up with a new controller to accompany Resident Evil 4, Capcom's upcoming release for the PlayStation 2. The reddish-orange controller is in the shape of a blood-spattered chainsaw on a display stand with the PS2 buttons on the top. There is even a rip cord that triggers a chainsaw-like roar.
The good news is the chainsaw blade doesn't move. But it does affect what's happening in Resident Evil 4. Raise or lower the controller and the chainsaw in the game wielded by the character Leon follows suit.
"That's something very new that's never been done on a peripheral for PlayStation 2," Birute Tursa, director of operations for NubyTech. The controller, which works for all PS2 games, will retail for $59.99 when it hits shelves in October.
The chainsaw controller is an upgraded model of the one that accompanied the previously released Nintendo GameCube version of the game. That was yellow - and blood-spattered - but did not have the rip cord and did not affect the chainsaw in the game.
