Michael Chiklis is set to join Lucy Liu in Rise, the Sebastian Gutierrez-directed horror thriller that will shoot next month. Ghost House Pictures is mounting the project. Chiklis, who stars in FX series The Shield, took Rise for his hiatus film. He'll play a haunted police detective whose daughter was killed by a strange cult. [Source: THR]

Primary Da Vinci Code Casting Complete

In the final major piece of casting in The Da Vinci Code, Variety reports Paul Bettany will play the albino fanatic, Silas. Ron Howard is directing the Akiva Goldsman-scripted adaptation of the Dan Brown novel, with Tom Hanks and Audrey Tautou playing the lead roles.

Ian McKellen, Alfred Molina and Jean Reno recently joined the cast. The role of Silas was being linked to such actors as Christopher Eccleston and Lambert Wilson but ultimately went to Bettany. Shooting starts next month and will open May 19. Brian Grazer is producing with John Calley. [Source: Dark Horizons]

Alice Cooper Thinking Up Fresh Horror Idea?

Alice Cooper has an idea for a great horror movie - about what happens with rock peer Keith Richards' used blood. Ok, it's not real but it could be. The rock icon says he's amazed the likes of Richards and Iggy Pop are still alive after years spent abusing their bodies, and suggests filmmakers should work on a concept about how they preserve their bodies.

Cooper says, "Iggy shouldn't be alive at all...He's like an old baseball glove...and Keith Richards should have been dead years ago. Nobody can live through that. Of course, he gets new blood every year; he has a 15-year-old Swedish girl's blood in him right now. But there's a great horror movie there somewhere because where does his old blood go...? They have to drain it and dump it somewhere. I love that idea."

    Scaled Down Ring 3?

The husband-and-wife producing duo of Walter F. Parkes and Laurie MacDonald says they are developing a third, scaled-down Ring movie. It reportedly won't necessarily need the same cast of Naomi Watts and the boy who plays her son, David Dorfman, who were in the first two horror movies. "We actually have a kind of cool approach to it. That's in the beginning stages," MacDonald said.

Parkes added, "It's easy to scale down Ring 3 as a small picture that's not incredibly expensive. By its very nature it can be a small movie and doesn't need the same cast." [Source: Sci Fi Wire]

    Sarsgaard Talks Skeleton Key

Peter Sarsgaard, star of the upcoming supernatural suspense film The Skeleton Key, told SCI FI Wire that his own belief in the occult mirrors that of the film. "I think I'm in cahoots with the movie in that I believe that if you believe in something strong enough, then it can affect you. I think that my favorite horror movies don't rely on an element that is just true; that the characters believe in that thing is what makes it true."

In The Skeleton Key, Sarsgaard plays a New Orleans attorney who works on the estate of an elderly couple, whose hired nurse (Kate Hudson) discovers strange voodoo-influenced elements in and around the home. Sarsgaard said that his own upbringing affected him in ways analogous to the film's elements. "Because I grew up believing in Satan, it makes me act a certain way in my life, which has probably incorporated more evil in my life than there would have been, because I'm reacting to it, because it's a character in my life," Sarsgaard said. The Skeleton Key opens in theaters Aug. 12.

Tarantino & Rodriguez Reteaming for Grind House

Quentin Tarantino and Robert Rodriguez are teaming up to make a film under Bob and Harvey Weinstein's new shingle. Tarantino and Rodriguez will each write and direct a 60-minute horror film, and the two films will be packaged under the title Grind House, which is planned for a spring 2006 release through the Weinstein Co.

It also will include its own trailers, bonus materials and added extras from other filmmakers that will be packaged together between the two horror flicks in a tribute to the old, big-city movie houses like those on New York's 42nd Street that earned the moniker grindhouses for running genre pictures back to back.

Tarantino said Grind House could be the first in a series of films. [Source: The Hollywood Reporter]

Possible Series Based on Palahniuk's Haunted?

Cry Wolf Hitting Theaters Sept. 23

Cry Wolf, starring Julian Morris, Lindy Booth, Jared Padalecki and Jon Bon Jovi, is set for a Sept. 23 release. Here's the official site: http://www.crywolfmovie.com. Looks like they may have an interactive game going using AIM. Watch the trailer to the end and there are some instructions.

Here's the synopsis: Nobody believes a liar - even when they're telling the truth. When a young woman is found murdered, a group of local high school students decide to further scare their classmates by spreading online rumors that a serial killer called "The Wolf" is on the loose. By describing "The Wolf's" next victims, the students' game is to see how many people they can convince - and if anyone will uncover the lie. But when the described victims actually do start turning up dead, suddenly no one knows where the lies end and the truth begins. As someone or something begins hunting the students themselves, the game turns terrifyingly real.

Hilary Swank Joins Joel Silver's The Reaping

Jam reports Hilary Swank has signed with producer Joel Silver to star in his newest horror The Reaping. She'll play a woman who specializes in giving the scientific explanations for myths, legends and miracles.

Swank's character will meet her match when she travels to a town that seems to be suffering the 10 biblical plagues.

"It's a very scary script because Hilary's character comes up against something that is very real," promises Silver, who produced House on Haunted Hill, Thirteen Ghosts, Ghost Ship, Gothika and House of Wax through his Dark Castle Entertainment.

Silver was the first filmmaker to offer Halle Berry a movie after she won her Oscar for Monster's Ball.

"Gothika was a good choice for Halle because it was a thriller that made $150 million US worldwide. It showed she could carry a commercial drama," says Silver. "Hilary will prove the same thing with The Reaping. Even though these women win Oscars, studios are reluctant to let them carry a film."

Silver hopes to have The Reaping out next spring.

Swank is in Bulgaria filming the crime thriller The Black Dahlia with Josh Hartnett, Scarlett Johansson and Aaron Eckhart for director Brian De Palma.

"We can put these horror thriller out faster than most regular studio films," says Silver who is not worried about Swank's schedule delaying The Reaping.

Savini's Chill Factor Heading to Major TV Entity?

IGN caught up with Tom Savini at the 2005 Electronic Entertainment Expo (more on that later) where Tom hinted a bit at a possible new development for the Chill Factor series.

"I directed the pilot and of course you expect me to say this but it is really good," Tom said. "The reviews have been amazing, people love this thing. It's not official yet but a major TV entity is in the process of buying the option on Chill Factor and the intention is to produce 13 right off the bat, the next batch of them will be financed by the network and I'll probably direct them."

Delpy & Hawke in Elizabeth Bathory Pic?

Ethan Hawke and Julie Delpy are in final negotiations to star in Bathory, where Delpy will make her directorial debut, working from her own script about the legendary Elizabeth Bathory, who inspired many a vampire myth with sadistic rituals that included bathing in the blood of virgins. Cronenberg a Front Runner for Pal d'Or at Cannes

The Hollywood Reporter said filmmaker David Cronenberg, with a very accessible picture, has emerged as one of the front-runners for the Palme d'Or at the halfway point of the 2005 Festival de Cannes.

Cronenberg's A History of Violence, described by THR as an intelligent and exciting thriller about a family threatened by mobsters. Cheering and applause followed the press screening of the Cronenberg film Sunday night.

Atom Egoyan's stab at a classic thriller, Where the Truth Lies, truly divided audiences, causing some to shake their heads while others nodded in approval. Those who bought into the complex tale of two top U.S. comedians from the '50s involved with the murder of a young woman, found it to be a well-crafted and accomplished entry.

Shutter Gets $1 Million Deal at Cannes

Bangkok's The Nation is reporting the local blockbuster horror movie Shutter will be the most expensive Thai film ever sold for a Hollywood remake - a deal reportedly worth twice as much as the sale of the script of the Japanese hit The Ring.

Hollywood's Regency Company will sign a $1 million deal with GTH Co, the Thai distributor, during the Cannes Film Festival. Korean-American Roy Lee is the key player behind the deal. As a representative of Regency Co, he has met with GTH during the past several months. Previously, Lee has brought other Asian remakes to the world's movie buffs, including The Ring and The Grudge. Lee's deal for The Ring remake was worth $500,000.

"We used to be envious when other Asian movies were bought to be remade. Now it's our turn, and moreover the chance comes with the highest price too," GTH president Visute Poolvoralak said.

Directed by the young duo of Banjong Pisanthanakul and Parkpoom Wongpoom, Shutter was their top box-office hit last year.

    Casting for Elmore Leonard's Killshot?

Variety reports (via DH) Viggo Mortensen, Diane Lane, Mickey Rourke and Justin Timberlake are being rumored as the main cast for John Madden's big-screen adaptation of scribe Elmore Leonard's Killshot. Thriller follows a woman and her blue-collar husband who become targets for killers after stumbling upon an extortion plot hatched by the baddies. Pic is a WeinsteinCo. roll out in which Disney has a stake. It will be released under the branded Quentin Tarantino Presents label.

David Lynch Working on Inland Empire

THR reports (via Dark Horizons) that French outfit StudioCanal is backing the upcoming project from David Lynch titled INLAND EMPIRE (all caps is part of the title apparently, although Variety reports Lynch wouldn't say why).

StudioCanal declined to talk about the project, which it has been trying to keep top secret. Laura Dern, Justin Theroux, Harry Dean Stanton and Jeremy Irons all star in the film which Lynch has been shooting under the radar for two years. Lynch won't say when it will be finished but the aim looks to be a world premiere at Cannes next year.

"It's about a woman in trouble, and it's a mystery, and that's about all I want to say about it," said Lynch recently. The title refers to the bleak residential area on the edge of the desert near Los Angeles. The film has also been shot on digital video.

Jason & Mrs. Voorhees Reunited in New Horror Flick

Betsy Palmer (Friday the 13th), is working on the new thriller Penny Dreadful, currently in production in New York. The film, written and directed by filmmaker Bryan Norton, is set in an empty and mysterious townhouse in NYC's West Village. Friday The 13th Part 2's Warrington Gillette will also star, which reunites the actress that portrayed the camp counselor slasher herself, Mrs. Voorhees, with her big screen son Jason.

Penny Dreadful is a supernatural thriller that centers on a young upstart couple who inherit a beautiful West Village brownstone in NYC. They soon discover there's more than meets the eye in their new home. Does the house hold a terrible secret? Betsy Palmer plays Trudie Tredwell, a local psychic called in to investigate the strange proceedings.

Penny Dreadful is written and directed by filmmaker Bryan Norton. Norton, a horror movie aficionado, promises the requisite thrills and chills and has set out to make a film that will be a "valentine" to horror fans everywhere. Filmed in and around New York City, "Penny Dreadful" will be premiering at film festivals this fall.

Spike TV Developing Original Blade TV Movie

Staci Layne over at About Horror reports Spike TV will adapt Blade, the Marvel supernatural-hero, as a two-hour, action-adventure, horror television movie in early 2006.

Blade the TV movie will be produced by New Line Television and Marvel Studios. David Goyer is the executive producer (he wrote the three screenplays for the Blade trilogy, and produced and directed the supposedly final installment Blade: Trinity). No stars have been announced yet.

Australian Horror Flick Front & Center at Cannes

A horror movie produced in South Australia will take centre stage at this week's prestigious Cannes Film Festival in France. The budget production, Wolf Creek draws on three of Australia's most notorious murder cases and has been labelled the Australian version of the cult horror movie The Blair Witch Project.

Producer Matt Hearne says the film draws on the Peter Falconio, Snowtown and Ivan Milat backpacker murders.

"It really plays on that fear of the outback, fear of the unknown you know and realising that once you're actually in that scenario and out in the middle of the desert, and if something goes wrong you really have nowhere to run or hide," he said.

The film cost $1.4 million to make but sold for $7 million.

    HBO Confirms Carnivale Cancelled

Variety reports (via Sci Fi Wire) that HBO confirmed it is canceling Carnivale, its Depression-era supernatural drama, after two seasons. HBO had produced a total of 24 episodes in the show's run.

HBO entertainment president Carolyn Strauss said the network had "decided not to renew Carnivale" because the series had come to a natural end, the trade paper reported.

A Teeny Bit of Remake News on The Fog

And because we haven't had near enough Adrienne Barbeau mentions recently...Sci Fi Wire reports Selma Blair, who stars in the upcoming horror remake The Fog, surprised journalists when she flung a false breast at director Rupert Wainwright during a press conference on the Vancouver, B.C. set.

"That's the Adrienne Barbeau part of the role," Blair told SCI FI Wire, referring to the star of the original 1980 The Fog. "I'm just speaking out for flat-chested girls across America."

The well-endowed Barbeau played Stevie Wayne in the original John Carpenter film, a role that Blair reprises in the new version. While Blair will maintain some of the character's physical attributes, her story has been changed slightly. Rather than spending the majority of the film in the island's lighthouse, where she acts as a radio DJ, Stevie will make a daring escape and meet up with the other main characters, played by Tom Welling and Maggie Grace.

More Movie Questions for Our Really Scary Crew

A couple of folks in the Really Scary gang need a hand. They've described a couple of movies and want to know if you guys can help them with the titles. Here are their letters - e-mail us here if you think you can help 'em out:

In the 60's I watched a really scary movie at the show, it was a Saturday matinee. I don't remember the name and perhaps you can help me with that. I remember the ending. A head of a woman (the woman was bald) was on this table, she was being kept alive (not sure how), and her last words were "bury me, bury me"! (think that is how the movie ended)

I also remember arms being connected to a wall, and this woman's head was able to control the arms on the wall. I think that is how she killed the evil man who had done this to her, by controlling the arms and strangling him.

Does this sound familiar to you?
    Kathy

    And here's the other one:

I hope someone at your web site might know the title of a movie I have been looking for. It is an old movie made back in the late seventies, early eighties. It is about a bunch of kids going to spend the night at an old house. The story behind the house is that the father went crazy, killing the whole family including himself. Somehow the youngest son survived and lived in the house by himself for many years. In the end of the movie one of the girls killed him by hitting him with the car and the front gate went through him. I believe the house also had one of those big shrub mazes in the back yard, like in the "Shining".
    Thank You,
    A Movie Buff

    Thanks Really Scary-ites!

As always, you came through for us again. When we asked for votes to keep the Really Scary Podcast ahead of the podcast sham that is Paris Hilton, you guys drove us up three spots in the running on Podcast Alley! Oz Distributor Picks Up Homicidal Sheep Flick

Australia's The Age reports an Australian film distributor has bought the rights to a New Zealand horror comedy about homicidal sheep, before even a frame of film has been shot.

Black Sheep, written and to be directed by Jonathan King, sees the tranquil New Zealand farmland disturbed by a genetic experiment gone wrong that turns sheep into crazed killers.

"The animals, locations and traditions of the Kiwi countryside burst to life, turn inside out and go for the jugular," King told Wellington's Dominion Post.

The Weta Workshop of Lord of the Rings director Peter Jackson, who cut his teeth on low-budget horror comedies, will be doing the special effects.

"Only a New Zealand film-maker could come up with a story that turns the cute and cuddly into the evil and menacing," Icon Australia chief executive Mark Gooder said.

Icon will distribute the film in Australia, New Zealand and Britain.

"This is a fun project that is simply and undeniably commercial in its intent," Gooder told the newspaper. The New Zealand Film Commission has been funding Black Sheep, King's first feature project after making shorts and music videos.

A promotional reel for the movie generated a "huge buzz" at the American Film Market last year, according to trade publication the Hollywood Reporter. Filming of Black Sheep is expected to begin later this year, for release in late 2006.

Pitt & Blanchett Joining Fincher Film?

Empire magazine reports Brad Pitt and Cate Blanchett are in talks to work together in David Fincher's long-delayed The Curious Case of Benjamin Button.

The film is based on an F. Scott Fitzgerald story, and follows an old man who mysteriously begins aging backwards. Things get complicated when, at the age of 50, he falls in love with a 30 year-old. Which means everything's great when they're both 40, but 15 or 20 years after that people are going to start talking.

Fincher has been talking about the project for years, even before he made Panic Room, and today's news suggests that things are finally moving. Although Fincher is also reportedly prepping serial killer movie Zodiac with Jake Gyllenhaal, Mark Ruffalo and Robert Downey Jr.

We've dabbled a bit in some complicated programming (complicated for us anyway) and came up with a Really Scary Forum! We're super excited and hope you'll drop in and give it a whirl. We've kicked the tires a bit and haven't managed to break it. Hopefully that'll hold now that we've told everyone about it! Click here for the forum.

"Do you know what's Really Scary? You want to forget something. Totally wipe it off your mind. But you never can. It can't go away, you see. And... and it follows you around like a ghost."
--Eun-ju, A Tale of Two Sisters

'Well, we need to nip this thing in the bud. I mean, otherwise, things are going to get Really Scary.'
--Cordelia Chase, Buffy the Vampire Slayer

'From here on, it gets Really Scary.'
--Geoffrey Rush, House on Haunted Hill

    'Wanna see something Really Scary?'
--Dan Aykroyd, Twilight Zone The Movie
