New Salem's Lot with 50 Pages Orginally Cut

Cemetery Dance reports Doubleday is republishing Stephen King's Salem's Lot this fall as a special illustrated 560 page hardcover edition. But the bigger news is that it will feature approximately 50 pages of deleted material that King cut from his original manuscript. It's hitting shelves with a SRP of $35.

The Devil's Rejects Release Moved Up

Lion's Gate has announced they are moving up the release date of The Devil's Rejects to July 22 "to more firmly plant it in this lucrative summer play period," said Steve Rothenberg, President of Distribution, Lions Gate Films.

And considering the struggles that took place just to get House of 1,000 Corpses released, what does Rob Zombie think?

"I am thrilled with Lion's Gate's decision to push The Devil's Rejects up from August to July," Zombie said. "After our explosive test screening and the overwhelming response from the fans I have been dying to get this out there. This going to be one very psychotic July."

Amityville Gets An 'R' & Trailer Debuts Today

Just got word from MGM that The Amityville Horror remake is rated R. Got that rating for "violence and terror, sexuality, language and brief drug use."

Check in with Yahoo! Movies at approximately 4 p.m. PST today for the unveiling of the final trailer.

Trailer for Schrader's Exorcist Version Online

One of Bloody Disgusting's readers started watching the Australian release of The Exorcist remake DVD and found that the trailer for director Paul Schrader's (Cat People) version is on the disk as well. You'll recall that he was the first director tapped with the remake gig - made the movie, the execs didn't like it, dumped him and hired Renny Harlin to make an entirely new version. Click here to find it, along with a photo gallery from the trailer, over at BD's site!

    A Scanner Darkly Trailer Live

Ain't It Cool News reported that iFilm has a trailer up for A Scanner Darkly. Based on the Philip K. Dick story, this trippy looking flick is directed by Richard Linklater of Slacker fame and stars Keanu Reeves, Winona Ryder, Woody Harrelson and Robert Downey Jr. Click here for the trailer.

    House of Wax Trailer Live

The full-length trailer is live for the House of Wax remake starring Elisha Cuthbert, Chad Michael Murray and Paris Hilton. Check it out here. Neat little "Whatever Happened to Baby Jane" homage in there. And even though we're not sold on the WB does the House of Wax, the trailer shows promise. It opens May 6.

Tarantino Writing and Directing CSI Finale

THR reports Quentin Tarantino has signed to direct the season finale episode of CSI: Crime Scene Investigation. Tarantino also has come up with an original story for the episode, which is expected to shoot in early April and air May 19, according to CSI executive producer Carol Mendelsohn.

Tarantino has long been a fan of the stylish forensic drama as series creator/executive producer Anthony Zuiker learned when he bumped into Tarantino at an awards show during CSI's first season. They have pursued him to direct an episode for some time, and after members of the CSI crew ran into Tarantino a few weeks ago while the show was doing some location shooting in Las Vegas, the stars finally aligned for him to helm the show's fifth-season closer, Mendelsohn said.

He is catapaulted into the future where he can see his death. Only if he breaks free can he change the outcome.

The Thing, Dune & Dog Soldier Action Figures

The annual Toy Fair is underway and Figures.com has some great coverage. They're reporting that SOTA has announced their Now Playing Series 3 line-up, which will include figures based on the moveis Legend, Dog Soldiers, Dune and The Thing.

The Thing line will feature a boxed set recreating the classic scene in the dog kennel. They'll also produce a figure for the Kurt Russel character. Also, SOTA said a set featuring R.J. MacReady with parka and dynamite and a towering 18" Blair Monster as seen towards the end of the movie is planned for 2006.

Scheduled for release around Halloween 2005, the Now Playing Series 3 also will include:

Baron Vladimir Harkonnen from Dune. A variant figure will also be made featuring the Baron with "black oil" on his face.

    Meg Mucklesbones from Legend.

    Werewolf from Dog Soldiers.

Click here for pics of some of the figures.

Other Now Playing revelations was the announcement of an 18" Creeper figure (from Jeepers Creepers) and a new series of resin busts and statues. The latter will launch this summer for a SRP of $39.99 each with one bust or statue being released every month thereafter. Confirmed busts, each measuring approximately 6" tall, include Darkman with two interchangable heads and the werewolf from American Werewolf in London. SOTA also said that an action figure of the werewolf will be heading our way some time a well.

    Paris Hilton Cell Phone Hacked?

It's probably a physical impossibility to not report on this, even though it hasn't a damn thing to do with horror. We simply cannot help ourselves. Apparently someone(s) gained entrance to Paris Hilton's cell phone account (she has a Sidekick II in case you were curious) and leaked photos and celebrity contacts to a bunch of web sites. So right about now somewhere in the neighborhood of 510 people are currently changing e-mail addresses and cell phone numbers.

Reportedly the Secret Service is making sites take the stuff down but at last google, we were able to find sites with the goods. Hey, wait a minute, Paris Hilton is in the House of Wax horror movie remake. Whew, thank goodness we were able to make this news post respectable wiht a horror tie-in.

We really want an Ossie Davis President Kennedy! Click here for pics of the Donnie Darko figure.

Constantine Opener Takes In $30.5 Million

The opening for Constantine may not have beaten the comedy Hitch but it did set several records of its own this weekend: It was the biggest opening ever for an R-rated film during any four-day holiday session with $30.5 million, and it was a company best for Warners for the Presidents Day weekend. Welling will play a local boat owner from the town, and Grace will portray a college girl who is back in her hometown for the summer. [Source: THR]

Writers David R. Williams and Richard Moore have joined forces as co-publishers and co-editors of Red Scream magazine. Red Scream's premiere issue is set for a mid-April release with short fiction by Tom Piccirilli, John Everson and Wrath James White.

"The focus of Red Scream is horror in culture and entertainment," said Williams, author of the cult novels Killer Asylum and Twilight in the Spaces Between. "The magazine will feature horror fiction by the newest voices, in-depth film analysis more akin to Bright Lights or Sight and Sound than say, Fangoria, and will look into the darkest corners of the internet."

Red Scream will be published five times a year. Each issue is 64 pages, with a full color cover and black and white interior.

Haute Tension Getting an 'R' & Dubbed

Dread Central reports Haute Tension director Alexandre Aja told them, "The version of 'High Tension' that you are about to see is a dubbed English translation of the original French-language film, featuring Cecile de France's own voice in the part of Marie. The new version has also been re-edited slightly, resulting in a running time that is about one minute shorter than the original."

"High Tension was conceived as an ode to the 1970's American horror/slasher films I loved as a teenager; so it is a source of great satisfaction to me that American audiences will now be able to experience the film on the same visceral level as French audiences, without the distraction of subtitles. Every filmmaker hopes that his or her work will be seen by the largest audience possible. Now, as an English language film, 'High Tension' has the opportunity to travel to U.S. theaters. I want to thank Lions Gate Films for making this possible."

Actress Cecil de France (Around the World in 80 Days) stars in Tension as a Marie, a woman who is forced to pursue her best friend's kidnapper after a brutal home invasion. Tension, which opens in theaters June 3, also stars actress Maiwenn (The Fifth Element, The Professional). Aja is currently prepping a remake of Wes Craven's The Hills Have Eyes for Dimension Films.

Theaters This Week, Next Week & Beyond

This weekend sees Keanu Reeves in the "Americanized" Constantine, based on the Hellblazer comic book. Also opening this week is Son of the Mask, the sequel to the Jim Carrey flick also based on a comic book.

Next weekend Wes Craven's Cursed finally hits the theaters. March 4 sees a couple of promising openings with Adrien Brody in The Jacket and although not horror by any stretch, Be Cool based on Elmore Leonard's book might be a good bet.

A bit further down the road, A Sound of Thunder, based on the Ray Bradbury short story, is slated for March 11. This one's been delayed a good many times. We'll see if this date holds up. Then the week after, Ring 2 will debut March 18.

Proyas Tapped for Supernatural Tale Knowing

Empire reports I, Robot director Alex Proyas has signed on to direct Knowing, a spooky, supernatural horror flick. It's the destiny-defying tale of a man who digs up a 1950s time capsule, which contains children's drawings that seem to predict horrific events in the future. The events in one drawing have yet to transpire though and the man who dug the whole thing up takes it upon himself to make sure they never do.

    Hammer Films Rises Again

Variety reports (via Fango) that Britain's Hammer Films has risen again and is now aiming to create new horror pics on modest budgets (around $4 million). Teamed with Australian producer Chris Brown's Pictures in Paradise company, the new Hammer has three pictures on its slate:

Reason: a couple whose paranoid friend's stories of demons turn out to be true, written by Andy Cull.

Supernatural: a criminal gang heads into the Outback to evade the law and runs into something much worse, scripted by Chris Fitchett.

Jeb: a family is plagued by a creature dwelling within the walls of their home, penned by Nick Ward.

Hammer head Terry Ilott tells the trade, "Everybody's got a horror label these days. If you've got an ax, you're pretty much in business. But a lot of those movies are really action films. We've tried to stay away from stalk 'n' slash films and creature features. We think there's a market for intelligent horror, not comfortable psychological thrillers but films that are really scary."

The trio of chillers is slated to shoot over the next year.

Silent Hill Movie Adaptation Story Revealed

Empire Online reports the plot for the Silent Hill movie adaptation has been released. [Possible spoilers ahead] The story is an original tale but one that bares certain similarities to the plot of the original PlayStation Silent Hill game.

According to producer Don Camody, the film kicks off with a woman called Rose, whose daughter is dying of a terminal disease. Unwilling to accept this, Rose chucks Sharon in the car and heads off to see a faith healer but, en route, ends up in the twisted township of Silent Hill. Much like Harry Mason's daughter Cheryl in the original game, Sharon disappears and Rose sets out to find her amid the mist and monsters that inhabit the ostensibly sleepy community. Aiding her in the quest is Cybil, a local cop who also helped Harry in the game.

If you've played the games then you'll know that, apart from demonic beings that resemble twisted parodies of human beings, the freaky thing about Silent Hill is the dark world. With nary a hint of warning, the character can be transported to a parallel version of the town with concrete replaced by rusting iron, meat hooks hanging from the ceiling and a rather fetching ensemble of gore and filth adorning every available surface. In the film it's this darkness that is enveloping the town and trapping its inhabitants and Rose must find a way to deal with the demons behind it all in order to get her daughter out alive.

Angel, Fred, Wesley & Lorne Join Figure Line-up

Figures.com reports Diamond Select Toys' next two characters in their growing collection of Angel and BTVS action figures will be Angel and Fred. They're slated for a summer release. Watch for Lorne and Wesley figures this spring.

As with past releases, multiple versions of each character will be produced in order to show each character as they appeared throughout the show’s five year run.

    Really Scary Podcast Baby!

We're incredibly excited (and not just a little bit geeky) to announce the Really Scary Podcast! Valarie was our official testing broadcaster and this was her first audio work - so be gentle with her. Our first little test podcast is live (look at its teeny, tiny hands and toes - it's just like a baby!). Click here for the feed.

For those of you that haven't joined this cult yet, a podcast aggregator will let your computer automatically go search for the audio shows you want to hear and download them on whatever schedule you set (like say having it ready for your iPod, iRiver or other portable audio player right before you head off to work). As with anything open to the masses - there's a lotta good and a lotta crap. But the crap is endearing in its own special way. Hopefully we'll move past the crap stage soon.

Here's a handful of sites that have info, aggregators you can download and links to shows & programs. Please let us know what you think!

    SXSW Film Festival Lineup

Tatopoulos Helming Last Voyage of Demeter

Dread Central reports Patrick Tatopoulos will make his directorial debut with Phoenix Pictures' The Last Voyage of the Demeter, a film concerning the crew of the ship that brought Dracula from Transylvania to England.

Tatopoulos has made a name for himself in the FX industry with flicks like Bram Stoker's Dracula and most recently creating look, sets and creatures for Len Wiseman's Underworld universe.

There were reports earlier in the week that Val Kilmer and Adrien Brody were reportedly intersted in the film but Dread Central spoke with Demeter screenwriter Bragi Schut, currently adapting Steve Niles' Criminal Macabre, and Schut said, "Unfortunately, no truth to the rumor. I know Adrien and I'm sure I'd know if he was interested in the material."

    Really Scary Review: Ong Bak

    Review by Valarie Thorpe

Synopsis: One night a former native of a rural Thai village has his men steal the head of the town's ONG BAK (Buddha statue) to win favor with ruthless Bangkok crime boss Khom Tuan. The locals regard the theft as a catastrophe, and seek a champion to retrieve their lost treasure. They find their man in Ting (Tony Jaa), an orphaned youngster raised at the local temple, and schooled by Pra Kru, a kindly monk, in an ancient system of Muay Thai: 'Nine Body Weapons.' Ting travels to the mean streets of Bangkok, where he's forced to compete in illegal street fights, taking on both local and foreign opponents to win the head of ONG BAK from the pitiless underworld kingpin.

Ong Bak is stuntman-turned-actor Tony Jaa's first lead role. Doubling as the martial arts choreographer as well, Jaa does not use any wirework or CG effects in his stunts.

I'm not going to go into the story much, the synopsis provided by the production company is pretty good. There is a bit of slapstick, but nothing on the level of a Jackie Chan film. This movie is about the fighting and the fighting is nothing short of spectacular. No wire-fu stuff here -- this is the real deal and choreographed with a true vision. Set-ups I hadn't seen before, but not so contrived that it was unbelievable. [Click the ## symbol below for the entire review, trailer & photo]The cinematography is a high point as well. A sweeping style is used that makes scenes larger than life, exampled in the opening sequence when Jaa's character Ting wins a tree-climbing competition that gives a whole new, and painful, meaning to the game King of the Hill.

Nice transitions between the small town feel and the streets of Bangkok. I don't know if this was all filmed on location but is definitely seems like it.

But back to why we're here - the fighting. Awesome scene at a gas station where Ting's legs catch fire and he just keeps on fighting. Big flying kicks with flames leaping from his legs is something to see. Remember, no CG stuff here and it doesn't look like much in the way of pads to protect his legs either. Production notes revealed that Jaa said he actually got burned during that scene.

Another memorable scene involves Ting backed into a dead end alley. His exit comes via the tops of the heads and shoulders of the dozen or so men blocking his way out. Not a fight, but a cool stunt nonetheless.

The only minor quibble I had with the movie were the slow motion repeats of several of the cooler stunts. It takes you out of the moment and reminds you that you’re watching a movie. That's what we have DVD players for -- we can flashback on a scene at will. Director doesn't need to do it for us. Small thing though.

The story's fine, no real surprises but solid. Very cool underwater scene near the end as well. Won't ruin that for you but it's sweet looking.

Ong Bak is thigh-pounding Thai fighting and Jaa's Muay Thai technique is a complete blast to watch. And if this movie is any indication, filmdom has a bright new star on the action roster. Ong Bak is a furiously paced, beautifully choreographed movie.

Cthulhu & Elder Scrolls Videogame Deals

Eurogamer reports 2K Games, Take-Two's new publishing label, is set to co-publish The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion after its mother-publisher struck a deal with developer Bethesda Softworks, who will continue to direct development and retain all future rights to the franchise.

2K Games has undertaken to publish Oblivion in late 2005 on PC and "a next-generation console system" - presumably Xbox 2, since neither of the others will be out in that timeframe.

In a separate deal with Bethesda, 2K Games has also agreed to co-publish Call of Cthulhu: Dark Corners of the Earth, a Lovecraftian first-person horror game.

28 Days Later Scribe Making Halo Movie?

Variety reports (via Eurogamer) that Microsoft has quietly done a million-dollar deal with Alex Garland, author of The Beach and the screenplay for 28 Days Later, to adapt the Halo games into one film.

Microsoft has neither confirmed or denied the report, issuing a carefully worded statement that, having trumpeted the series' success to date, states, "We have not, however, made any official movie announcements."

That Microsoft has denied making an announcement rather than doing a deal is interesting, but it may just be that the platform holder doesn't want to rule anything out - and is happy for the Halo series to garner yet more headlines in the aftermath of Halo 2's enormous success.

Whatever the truth, the prospect of Microsoft hiring someone of Garland's pedigree to transform the series is hugely promising and in stark contrast to films based on games in the past, which have often wound up in the hands of people ill-equipped to understand and convert them - faithfully or successfully.

    Ghost Rider Casting

Eva Mendes, who stars in the upcoming Universal flick Hitch, is reuniting with the studio for Ghost Rider, an adaptation of the Marvel Comics comic book. Mendes will play opposite Nicolas Cage, who stars as the title character, a former motorcycle stuntman who agrees to let his body become host to a vengeful spirit -- becoming a bike-riding demon in the process -- to secure the safety of his true love (Mendes). Mark Steven Johnson is directing. Shane Salerno wrote the original draft of the Columbia project. [Source: The Hollywood Reporter]

    Boogeyman Tops Box Office

Amityville Son Trying to Sue Amityville Dad

The son of the family in the real Amityville horror house is taking his estranged father to court in a bid to end taunting he has had to endure as 'the kid from THAT house.'

Christopher Quaratino (corr) insists his father George Lutz greatly embellished the story of what happened in the creepy Long Island, New York, home where he grew up, to help sell the haunted house story as a movie.

His story, which made up most of Jay Anson's The Amityville Horror book, spawned a 1979 movie of the same name, and is now returning to movie theatres with Ryan Reynolds and Melissa George as the parents of a family living in hell.

Quaratino fears the new film will respark the taunting he has had to endure - for a story that is largely untrue. He claims he has been humiliated and exposed to ridicule for his association to Lutz and the horror house.

But Lutz has fired back that his estranged son is merely out to discredit him and the Amityville Horror franchise. A legal spokesman for Lutz says, "Everything that occurred, occurred when he (Quaratino) was seven-years-old and we all know how memory works."

Quaratino's efforts to sue his father in the Las Vegas, Nevada, courts have so far failed, but the son insists he'll fight on. [ContactMusic.com]

The Universal Pictures project tells the story of a young slacker who meets the woman of his dreams but finds that he can win her only by first battling and defeating her seven evil ex-boyfriends. It is based on the graphic novel Scott Pilgrim Volume 1: Scott Pilgrim's Precious Little Life. [Source: The Hollywood Reporter]
