Raimi & Tapert Making Grudge Sequel

Now Playing reports (via Sci Fi Wire) Sam Raimi and Rob Tapert, who produced The Grudge, are already working with director Takashi Shimizu again on a sequel to the American remake based on his Japanese horror film Ju-on.

"We just came from a big story conference this whole last week," Raimi told the site. "[Shimizu] came to America, to Los Angeles, and we met with him in a little room on the Columbia Pictures lot and hammered out an outline for the first draft of part two. And he's planning, I think, on working in the same subtle, elegant way that he made the first film in."

Tapert says that The Grudge 2 will not be based on the Japanese sequel Ju-on 2, and will stand apart from the previous films in the series.

"The second one is much more of a standalone movie than [the first one] was," Tapert told the site. "In fact, there are very few elements in the second one, at least where it is right now, that are derivative of previous works. [The first one] kind of borrowed from all of the previous movies that have gone before. [And this one is going in a new direction,] and that's one of the reasons that the director is interested. He's kind of told the story so many times that he didn't want to go back and revisit what he's done, and it was only that [he and] the writer had some new ideas that they wanted to explore in terms of The Grudge [that brought them back]."

There is no word yet on whether star Sarah Michelle Gellar will return for the sequel, but like the last film, it will be filmed in Japan.

    F. Paul Wilson's The Keep Getting Comic Book

    F. Paul Wilson, author of Sims and the Repairman Jack novels, wrote on his message board that IDW (30 Days of Nights) will be publishing a comic book adaptation of his first novel, The Keep.
"Well, the revised contract is on my agent's desk, so I guess it's safe to tell you that IDW will be publishing a five-issue series of The Keep, scripted by yours truly and illustrated by the Forum's own Matthew D. Smith.

The first script is due this March with an eye toward starting publication this summer. The five issues will then be combined into a graphic novel.

I'm reeeeally looking forward to this. At last we'll see what the movie coulda/shoulda been."

    Super sweet!

David Fincher Considering Zodiac Killer Flick

Empire reports David Fincher in considering the serial killer thriller Zodiac for his next project. Fincher's film will be based on the hunt for the real-life psycho, The Zodiac Killer, who terrorised the San Francisco area over a period of twelve years (1966-1978) by recording at least 37 kills.

The Warner Bros/Paramount co-production will focus on the obsessive efforts of three people to bring Zodiac to justice, and the havoc it wreaked in their private lives. Fincher is currently in talks to direct the project, so very little is known about whether the film will focus on Zodiac, as well as the cops chasing him.

Jamie Vanderbilt is currently working on the script, based on two books, Robert Graysmith’s Zodiac and its 2000 sequel, Zodiac Unmasked: The Identity of America’s Most Elusive Serial Killer Revealed.

Calling On All You Really Scaryite Genuises

Because we're needy, we're looking for your expertise yet again -- Anthony's looking for a pic that goes something like this:
"I am looking for a movie that was out in the early 1980s this movie from what I remember started with a family in a car and the car was about to set fire or blow up. They all got out but a little girl in the back seat she was stuck in her seatbelt. The car blew up and she dies in the car and the family was horrified. Then that little girl came back to haunt the family. She had brown hair and braids. The sister who she comes back to haunt had blonde hair. The family thinks the girl is crazy and sends her to a mental institute where she is still haunted by the sister."

If you know the name of the flick Anthony's looking for, lay it on us here.

    Trailer for The Cave

Trailer for Tim Burton's Corpse Bride

Empire reports that as well as working on Charlie And The Chocolate Factory, Tim Burton has been busy with Corpse Bride, a gothic-styled animation whose hero will be voiced by Depp.

With a supporting voice cast that includes Helena Bonham-Carter, Albert Finney and Christopher Lee, it sounds about as close to liquid Burton as you could get. And the new trailer -- featuring ravens, a moonlit forest, a skeleton dog and a scary cemetery -- seems to confirm its must-see status. It's set to release Oct. 10. Click here for the trailer.

In other Corpse Bride news, McFarlane Toys announced they have purchased the exclusive license for all figures and toys based on Burton's Corpse Bride.

Creep Movie Posters Banned from UK Underground

The UK's Evening Standard reports tube (aka subway) chiefs have been forced into an embarrassing U-turn after banning posters for Creep, a horror movie about murder on the underground. The adverts were not allowed on grounds of "taste and decency" because they showed a bloody hand scraping down a train carriage window.

The ban was imposed despite the fact that London Underground had actually helped the film-makers shoot the British movie on location in disused stations.

The ban was lifted but the producers of Creep say that the decision was "too little, too late" because they have already paid for replacement posters in mainline stations. The film's publicists cannot get new posters up in time for its launch next week.

Funded by the UK Film Council, Creep was directed by scriptwriter Christopher Smith and stars German actress Franka Potente. Critics have called it the best horror film set in the capital since American Werewolf In London.

Producer Julie Bain said the poster ban was "highly amusing" because the movie had been filmed with Tube bosses' permission. "It's a bit ludicrous," she added. "This is fiction, not documentary. It's not based on real events - if it is, we are all in trouble."

    DVD Format War Officially Underway

The folks over at The Digital Bits have big DVD news out of the annual Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas. It looks like the DVD format war is for real.

Electronic Arts, Vivendi Universal Games, Sun Microsystems and Texas Instruments pledged their allegiance to Blu-ray Disc format. Then at a later HD-DVD presentation, Toshiba, NEC and Sanyo Electric all said that HD-DVD players will be available to U.S. consumers starting as early as September. And Warner, Universal and Paramount together announced some 89 titles that will be available on HD-DVD in time for the format's 4th quarter launch. Warner and its affiliates (New Line, HBO) alone will release some 50 titles. Here's some of the titles announced for HD-DVD:

    Paramount HD-DVD

New Titles - The Manchurian Candidate, Spongebob Squarepants, Sky Captain and the World of Tomorrow

Catalog Titles - Braveheart, Ghost, Sleepy Hollow, Vanilla Sky, Lara Croft: Tomb Raider, Star Trek: First Contact

    Universal HD-DVD

New Titles - The Bourne Supremacy, The Chronicles of Riddick, Van Helsing

Catalog Titles - Apollo 13, U-571, 12 Monkeys, Dune, The Thing, End of Days, Backdraft, Waterworld, The Bone Collector, Spy Game, Pitch Black, Conan the Barbarian

    Warner Bros/HBO/New Line HD-DVD

New & Catalog Titles - Batman Begins, Blade (New Line), Constantine, Charley and the Chocolate Factory, Dark City (New Line), Final Destination (New Line), Gothika, Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone, Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets, Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban, House of Wax (2005), The Mask (New Line), The Matrix, The Matrix Reloaded, The Matrix Revolutions, North by Northwest, The Phantom of the Opera (2004), Se7en (New Line)

Digital Bits expects this should go a very long way toward convincing consumers just how serious the HD-DVD camp is about supporting their format. One thing we don't know however, is whether any of these discs will feature significant bonus material, or if they'll just be movie-only releases with special editions to follow later.

USA Buys Exclusive Rights to Riding the Bullet

Variety reports (via Sci Fi Wire) USA Network locked up a six-year exclusive deal for Stephen King's Riding the Bullet flick, which debuted last year on only 100 screens before being pulled for lack of box office.

For a license fee of about $1 million, USA has blown out any pay TV window so that it can start playing Bullet in a double run Jan. 23, followed by three more plays within the next 10 days, the trade paper reported.

Bullet, based on King's e-book of the same name, stars Jonathan Jackson as a man who's obsessed by the prospect of his own death and that of his mother (Barbara Hershey). It opened in mid-October in a few test markets, averaged only $1,010 a screen and was pulled.

A USA spokesman told Variety that the network does not regard the movie's failure in the theaters as a gauge of its eventual cable TV performance.

IDW Picks Up Angel Comic Series

Silver Bullet Comics reports (via Moviehole) that a new Angel comic series is on the way and looks to resolve some of the cliffhangers from the TV series finale. When we all left the gang - Angel, Spike, Gunn, and Illyria - they were about to go head to head with the biggest baddest addition to the buffyverse. Then, just as they're about to attack, the screen goes black.

The mini-series will be published by IDW (30 Days of Nights), who recently snagged the rights to Angel from Dark Horse. Joss Whedon will be onboard as a creative advisor.

Reportedly, none of the characters from Buffy can turn up in this new comic series, because Dark Horse still own all the rights to that series. The first Angel comic should hit newstands in Summer 2005. They report that a Faith mini-series is rumored to follow soon after. Although, it will be interesting to see how the two companies handle characters that have crossed over onto both series.

McKean & Gaiman's MirrorMask at Sundance

Dave McKean and Neil Gaiman's MirrorMask will mark its debut at the Sundance Film Festival. Here's the details from the Sundance site:

    MIRRORMASK
    http://www.mirrormask.com
United Kingdom, 2004, 101 Minutes, color
    Director: Dave McKean
Screenwriter: Neil Gaiman, based on a story by Neil Gaiman and Dave McKean

Trevor Groth wrote this about the film: MirrorMask is a groundbreaking effort from graphic novelists and directors Dave McKean and Neil Gaiman. Teaming up with the Jim Henson company, they combine live action with digital animation in a spectacular concoction that will dazzle children and adults alike.

MirrorMask is set in a magical world with opposing kingdoms, one in perpetual light and the other in constant darkness. These lands exist in total balance until the Light Queen is put under a spell and falls into a magical sleep. Without the queen, the Light Kingdom has no protection from the minions of the dark. The fate of the world soon rests on the shoulders of Helena, a 15-year-old who finds herself on a fantastic journey to find the MirrorMask and realign the balance of power. Along the way, she encounters giant sloths, monkeybirds, dangerous sphinxes, and otherworldly creatures that defy description.

What is also impossible to describe are the incredible imagery, atmosphere, and universe that the film creates. This is one of the most visually stunning independent films I have ever seen. McKean and Gaiman understand the power of cinema not just to relate stories but to transport you into ethereal and poetic worlds. MirrorMask is storytelling that represents what independence is all about.

    Colonial Marine Hicks Collector Edition

The McFarlane Collector's Club announced that the exclusive version of Colonial Marine Hicks is set to be released in their Club Store at spawn.com Jan. 10.

Though it shares a sculpt with the Hicks that was released in Movie Maniacs Series 7 in Fall 2004, they say the Club version is radically different. This Hicks has a helmeted head and includes a motion tracker that hangs around the figure's torso. Instead of a pulse rifle, Club Hicks has a shotgun with a holster on his back. The package features a new base with egg pod and a dead facehugger accessory. Finally, this version features the McFarlane Toys Collector's Club designation on the clamshell packaging. They will sell for $10.

Christopher Lee Talks Wicker Man Follow-Up

Moviehole reports Christopher Lee spoke to The Herald about his next pic May Day, a follow-up (not sequel) to his cult classic The Wicker Man.

Lee tells the paper he has no qualms about returning to The Wicker Man, which was made more than 30 years ago. "It was the best film I ever made," he says. "But it's not the most successful. When you're talking about The Lord of the Rings and Star Wars, you're talking astronomical figures. The Wicker Man has now become a cult film."

Lee says this with evident pride. "It was unlike anything anybody had ever seen, which is why it played very badly during its day, of course."

Nevertheless, Lee is excited about the film, in which Vanessa Redgrave will appear as well. "Same producer, same director," he says, "but it's not The Wicker Man. How can we make a sequel? It was a very definitive ending, wasn't it?" he says with a deep laugh. "There are elements that you find in The Wicker Man: certain beliefs, the fact that we all sing, that it's funny, quite erotic and very alarming. And that it's a strange story set in Scotland."

"Do you know what's Really Scary? You want to forget something. Totally wipe it off your mind. But you never can. It can't go away, you see. And... and it follows you around like a ghost."
--Eun-ju, A Tale of Two Sisters

'Well, we need to nip this thing in the bud. I mean, otherwise, things are going to get Really Scary.'
--Cordelia Chase, Buffy the Vampire Slayer

'From here on, it gets Really Scary.'
--Geoffrey Rush, House on Haunted Hill

    'Wanna see something Really Scary?'
--Dan Aykroyd, Twilight Zone The Movie
