Cheech Marin Directing Senor Dracula Cheech Marin, remembered primarily as one half of the iconic stoner duo Cheech and Chong and occasionally spotted these days being killed and/or touting sexual services in Robert Rodriguez pictures, is now taking his first jaunt behind the camera since 1987, directing a Spanish take on a famous legend with Senor Dracula.
Senor Dracula is a film about the Spanish-language version of the 1931 horror classic. Shot at the same studio as the Bela Lugosi film -- at the same time and on the same sets -- the Spanish Dracula told the same tale but in an entirely different language. Marin's film will recount the tale of this production double-bill. [Source: Empire Magazine]
MGM Seduced by Succubus MGM has tapped thesps-turned-scribes Mark Famiglietti and Lane Garrison to pen horror comedy Succubus, based on an idea by Daredevil director Mark Steven Johnson.
Project's launching point is the legend of a cult of female demons, called succubae, who use their supermodel looks to seduce and steal men's souls to rule the planet. Story concerns two twentysomething best friends, one a ladies man, the other a nerd, whose lives are turned upside down when the nerd miraculously starts dating a supermodel. When the handsome friend discovers the supermodel is actually a succubus, he takes action and attempts to bring down the race of beautiful but evil succubae.
Johnson is on board to produce "Succubus" and may direct the film once he completes the comicbook actioner "Ghost Rider," starring Nicolas Cage. [Source: Variety]
Hollywood Film Festival Focusing On Horror, Sci-Fi & Fantasy The Hollywood Film Festival has formed an alliance with Film Threat and its founder Chris Gore as part of the fest's focus this year on the horror, sci-fi and fantasy genres. Gore noted that the Oct. 12-18 event will provide an outlet for genre films often left out of festivals.
"How will we discover the next Peter Jackson if festivals do not support young filmmakers who create fantastic visions?," he said. "Teaming with Carlos de Abreu and the Hollywood Film Festival will be a great way to showcase the best new work from indie genre filmmakers." [Source: Variety]

House of Wax Filming Gets Hotter Than Expected Australia's Courier Mail reports special effects involving life-sized wax figures have been blamed for a $10 million blaze on the set of the movie House Of Wax (Elisha Cuthbert, Paris Hilton) at the Gold Coast's Warner Roadshow studios.
Molten wax from the figures is believed to have come in contact with a gas burner, sparking a fire on the sound stage where the final scene of the remake of the 1953 horror movie classic was being shot. About 75 cast members and crew were inside when the building exploded in flames on Saturday night.
All managed to flee unscathed but the sound stage, reportedly controversially built by film giants Warner Bros and Village Roadshow two years ago with an $8 million low-interest loan from the Beattie Government, was destroyed.
Fire investigator Gordon Hemphrey said movie-makers were using gas burners to melt two wax figures when the fire broke out. "They were apparently filming the final burning of the House of Wax," Mr Hemphrey said.
"Molten wax and gas burners were being used to get the effect they wanted but the wax ran over a vat and made contact with the burners. They had all the precautions in place, including safety pits filled with water under the stage to catch the hot wax but something went wrong. The set was made from timber and polystyrene, so it was a very, very high fuel load and it went up very quickly."
Hemphrey said the building was engulfed within minutes and cast and crew members were lucky to escape unhurt. Exploding gas cylinders heightened the danger.
"We've lost three sets and some of our camera and sound equipment," House Of Wax spokeswoman Fiona Searson said. She confirmed a "burning sequence" was being filmed "when things got out of hand." She said filming would be delayed for several days but would not say whether actors including Cuthbert, star of the TV series 24, were on the set at the time. Hilton left Queensland earlier this month after finishing filming on the House Of Wax.

Debbie Rochon To Host Werewolf Trio DVD Debbie Rochon will host Hocus Focus Productions "The Lunar Pack DVD" due out in October. Rochon will be creating the character Mistress Misty, a woman with a history of fraternizing with some familiar monsters...and she has the babies to prove it! The Mistress will be the cohesive force holding the three short werewolf films together.
"I grew up in New York," Director Jason Liquori stated, "and never got to enjoy those late night shows with old horror films being introduced by a colorful character on local T.V., so I decided to produce my own." Liquori feels that a horror veteran like Rochon will be able to breathe life into the Mistress and help horror fans relate to the string of monster movies.
The three shorts are Dark Rose: 700 Year Itch, Sheep's Clothing and Crying Wolf. You can find out more about THE LUNAR PACK DVD and other Hocus Focus Productions films at www.hocfocprod.com.

Grudge Remake Trailer Online Yahoo Movies has posted the trailer for the remake of The Grudge. Starring Sarah Michelle Gellar, Clea Duvall and Bill Pullman, the original film is probably our favorite asian horror flick so far, hopefully they do a good job with the do-over. Click here for the trailer.
After seeing the trailer, we can tell you one thing though - they definitely recognize which scenes from the original are the most powerful as they used the three best in the trailer (watch for elevator, stairs, then shower). This isn't entirely surprising though, as the original director is directing this version as well.

Nightmare on Elm Street Reality Series? This one sounds a little weird but the New York Daily News reports (via Sci Fi) CBS has ordered a reality show based on Wes Craven's horror franchise Nightmare on Elm Street. Reynolds, newly engaged to singer Alanis Morissette, will play the young father of a family that moves into a haunted house.

Shyamalan Documentary Involvement? Here's a bit more regarding the M. Night Shyamalan brewhuhu we mentioned yesterday. A bunch of news sites are running the AP piece, including folks like MSNBC and the like. We can't help it, blame it on our suspicious nature but this feels like marketing to us. Sci Fi Channel even ran a press release about it on PRNewswire. So talking about themselves, they had these comments in the press release:
In an unprecedented move, SCI FI Channel will broadcast a controversial look at Academy Award-nominated writer/director M. Night Shyamalan
SCI FI Channel viewers will witness extraordinary unguarded moments, as well as attempts by the acclaimed filmmaker to shut down the production.
Sounds the teensiest bit like 'reality' TV -- and we all know that's never staged. Anyhoo, to had fuel to our fire (like we needed that), we just received a tip. This comes from a source we've not heard from before so we don't the reliability but here's what the tipster had to say:
"M. Night Shyamalan is actually the producer and writer of the documentary The Buried Secret of M. Night Shyamalan. The news stories currently circulating are designed to cover up Shyamalan's involvement (bank-roling and creative control) of the documentary about him."
Sarah Michelle Gellar Stopping by San Diego Comic-Con Sarah Michelle Gellar will make an appearance at the San Diego Comic-Con with a sneak peek of her new flick The Grudge. The convention runs from July 22 - 25. This is her first appearance at the San Diego shindig. Joining Gellar on stage is her Grudge co-star Jason Behr (Roswell).

M. Night Shyamalan & Sci Fi Channel: Feud or Marketing? The Sci Fi Channel was thrilled when M. Night Shyamalan agreed last fall to open his world to a documentarian's cameras. Then it reportedly all went sour.
CNN says Shyamalan quit on-screen, and an expected benign profile has become a three-hour expose, The Buried Secret of M. Night Shyamalan. Sci Fi has scheduled a July 18 air date.
Shyamalan had said having the cameras turned on himself was something new, alluding to it when the documentary was announced. "Agreeing to give unlimited access is a new experience for me," he said.
Different agendas might have been there from the start. While Shyamalan said last December he hoped the project "will demystify some of the mysteries of the filmmaking experience," Sci Fi said it wanted to dig out the source of his inspiration. It was all tied to the release this summer of The Village, Shyamalan's latest film.
After documentarians Nathaniel Kahn and Callum Greene started, the project became less about filmmaking and more about the filmmaker, said Greene, who also produced Lost in Translation (for which Sofia Coppola won an original-screenplay Oscar) and was approved by Shyamalan to work on this project.
Greene said he started to go off the "suggested" list of friends to speak to and contacted others in Shyamalan's life. The filmmaker was angered by the personal nature of what they were asking, he said.
"Slowly, his cooperation dried up," Greene said. "We saw that as a challenge and just didn't let go."
A spokeswoman for Shyamalan, Leslee Dart, said Shyamalan would not comment on the documentary.
The tension reached the point where Shyamalan walked away during an interview and hasn't done any others for them.
Greene said he recorded "unguarded moments" that revealed what Shyamalan was like. Neither he nor the Sci Fi Channel would be specific about what they found, and wouldn't say what the "buried secret" was.
"We feel completely confident we are on solid ground in getting this on the air, in a legal way," Sci Fi spokesman David Westover said. "If the project reveals more than Night was comfortable with, that was an inherent gamble that he was aware of long before this was started."
Yet there may be an element of hardball at play.
Going public with an air date and title "is part of a strategy to apply some pressure to help us with what we need to accomplish," Westover said. Things could change if Shyamalan sat down for another interview; Westover said the program's content isn't completely locked.

Fred Krueger as the Springwood Slasher Action Figure Before the scent of burned flesh hit the air, The Springwood Slasher was a twisted sociopath who serially tortured and killed children. The neighborhood parents of Elm Street took justice into their own hands and made him the dream walking, teen slashing, burn victim we all know as Freddy Krueger.
This summer NECA will offer an exclusive Fred Krueger, The Springwood Slasher action figure at the San Diego ComiCon, Wizard Chicago, and Monster Mania, NJ. It will feature the unharmed Fred Krueger's head as well as come with the alternate Freddy (Burned) head and hand. It will also come with Freddy's hat and a rag doll from a scene in the beginning of Freddy Vs. Jason. Here's some images and here's the packaging!

Y: The Last Man Comic Getting Movie Treatment Screenwriter Jeff Vintar (I, Robot) is adaptating Brian K. Vaughan's comic book Y: The Last Man for the big screen. The series focuses on the aftermath of a plague that wipes out all but one male, leaving him and the race of remaining women to figure out what happened. Vintar said in an interview with Sci Fi Wire that the challenge will be creating a satisfying ending, since the comic series is ongoing.
"Brian probably only has a vague idea of how it's going to end, because he's got three more years writing it," Vintar said. "The world may not be saved. The men are not going to come back. [Like] in a zombie film, you know the zombies are not going to go away, and yet at the end of the film, you want to feel like you've reached a dramatic high. It's not always easy. Not every film does it."
David Goyer (Blade III) is producing the film. [Source: Sci Fi Wire]
